An assisted living community is a residential community which provides supervision, assistance, and care to healthy individuals who do not need skilled nursing support. The types of service offered often involve assistance with ADLs. Occupants may be kept under observation and assessment. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer respite, hospice, or Alzheimer’s care. In New Jersey, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $45,000 . New Jersey has a number of provisions associated with this type of community. Department of Health and Senior Services supervises this community type. Staff members obtain training in a number of subjects. These include: pain management, residents rights, abuse and neglect, and assisted living concepts. Public assistance is available through 1115 Demonstration Waiver program–Managed Long-Term Services and Supports. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include prepare meals and snacks based on the Food and Nutrition board’s recommended dietary allowances, maintain a standard of food preparation that meets the needs of residents, and provide three meals a day. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include monitor dosage, supervise and assist with self-administration of medication, and administer medication. The maximum occupancy is 2 residents per room. There must be one bath or shower for every residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include transportation, limited nursing care, recreational activities, and assist with personal care. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as nursing needs, routines and preferences, plan updates regarding changes in physical or cognitive states, and a health care assessment.
