Assisted Living

An assisted living community is a residential community which provides care, support, and supervision to independent seniors who are not in need of skilled nursing support. Assisted living communities commonly offer help with the activities of daily life, help with transit and appointments, and outings for organized activity. In select instances, communities may provide “aging in place”, Alzheimer’s care, or nursing care. The monthly median cost for a private room is around $9,292 and the cost for a semi-private room is around $8,373 . Michigan has a number of provisions related to this type of community. The Department of Human Services licenses regulates this type of community. Staff are required to receive education in a variety of areas. These areas include first-aid, administration of medication, personal care, and staff training program based on the home’s program statement. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include supervised personal care, guidance, reminding resident of important activities to be carried out, and being aware of a resident’s general whereabouts. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as service plan identifies the individual’s need for services, The home must complete a service plan in cooperation with each resident and/or their representative, service plan takes into account the preferences and competency of the resident, and service plan identifies the individual’s need for activities. Public assistance is available through Medicaid State Plan. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide medical nutrition therapy if prescribed by a licensed health care professional, three daily meals and snacks must be provided, and Food must be prepared in accordance with the recommended daily dietary allowances of the Food and Nutrition Board of the National Academy of Sciences National Research Council. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include proper training of direct care workers to handle and administer medications, reminding a resident to maintain his/her medication schedule in accordance with the prescription, and medication supervision and administration. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 21.
