An assisted living community is an organized living community which offers care, supervision, and support to healthy persons who are not in need of skilled nursing care. The services offered often involve help with the activities of daily life. Residents may be kept under observation and evaluation. In some situations, communities may offer respite, hospice, or dementia care. In Michigan, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $48,000 . The state of Michigan maintains a number of provisions associated with this kind of community. The Department of Human Services licenses licenses this type of community. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include supporting a resident’s personal and social needs, being aware of a resident’s general whereabouts, guidance, and assisting a resident to keep appointments. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 21. Public assistance is available through Medicaid State Plan. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include proper training of direct care workers to handle and administer medications, medication supervision and administration, and reminding a resident to maintain his/her medication schedule in accordance with the prescription. Staff members obtain training in a variety of subjects. These areas include personal care, standard precautions, supervision, and residents rights and responsibilities. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide medical nutrition therapy if prescribed by a licensed health care professional, three daily meals and snacks must be provided, and Food must be prepared in accordance with the recommended daily dietary allowances of the Food and Nutrition Board of the National Academy of Sciences National Research Council. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as The service plan must be updated annually and following a significant change in health status, service plan identifies the individual’s specific needs for care, The home must complete a service plan in cooperation with each resident and/or their representative, and service plan takes into account the preferences and competency of the resident.
