Assisted living communities offer recreational activities, care, and oversight to persons around 65 years old. Assisted living communities often offer supervision of care, support with daily activities, and opportunities for leisurely activity. In certain instances, communities may offer nursing, continuing care, or hospice. In Michigan, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $48,000 . Michigan has specific regulations related to this kind of community. The Department of Human Services licenses governs this type of community. Staff members obtain training in a variety of fields. These areas include standard precautions, administration of medication, safety and fire prevention, and first-aid. Public assistance is available through Medicaid State Plan. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include supporting a resident’s personal and social needs, reminding resident of important activities to be carried out, supervised personal care, and guidance. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 21. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as The home must complete a service plan in cooperation with each resident and/or their representative, service plan identifies the individual’s need for activities, The service plan must be updated annually and following a significant change in health status, and service plan takes into account the preferences and competency of the resident. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide medical nutrition therapy if prescribed by a licensed health care professional, Food must be prepared in accordance with the recommended daily dietary allowances of the Food and Nutrition Board of the National Academy of Sciences National Research Council, and three daily meals and snacks must be provided. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include medication supervision and administration, reminding a resident to maintain his/her medication schedule in accordance with the prescription, and proper training of direct care workers to handle and administer medications.
