Assisted living communities arrange residential living communities and health care for persons who need help with things such as self-administering medication or preparing meals. The services offered often include assistance with activities of daily living. Residents may be kept under observation and assessment. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide “aging in place”, nursing care, or respite. The annual median cost for a private room is around $111,508 and the cost for a semi-private room is around $100,481 . Michigan maintains specific regulations associated with this kind of community. The Department of Human Services licenses certifies this community type. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include supervised personal care, guidance, supporting a resident’s personal and social needs, and assisting a resident to keep appointments. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 21. Staff are required to obtain education in a variety of subjects. These areas include residents rights and responsibilities, staff training program based on the residents’ service plans, standard precautions, and administration of medication. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include medication supervision and administration, reminding a resident to maintain his/her medication schedule in accordance with the prescription, and proper training of direct care workers to handle and administer medications. Public assistance is available through Medicaid State Plan. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as service plan identifies the individual’s need for services, service plan identifies the individual’s specific needs for care, A comprehensive written assessment that that describes prescribed treatments and medications that must be provided to the community prior to admission, and service plan identifies the individual’s need for activities. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include three daily meals and snacks must be provided, communities must provide medical nutrition therapy if prescribed by a licensed health care professional, and Food must be prepared in accordance with the recommended daily dietary allowances of the Food and Nutrition Board of the National Academy of Sciences National Research Council.
