Assisted living communities provide residential living communities and health care for your loved one who might require support with dressing or showering. Assisted living communities often provide assistance with appointments and transit, opportunities for social activity, and care supervision. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide respite, hospice, or dementia care. In Maryland, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $51,600 . Maryland maintains specific regulations related to this kind of community. The Department of Health and Mental Hygiene licenses this type of community. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include occasional assistance in accessing social and recreational services, assistance in accessing and coordinating health services, uncomplicated interventions to manage occasional behaviors that might disrupt or harm the resident or others, and monitoring and management of occasional psychological or psychiatric episodes or fluctuations that require uncomplicated intervention or support. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include meals must be varied, meals must be palatable, meals must be properly prepared, and programs must provide three meals a day and snacks. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as evaluation by a health care practitioner is required and changes must be made to the resident’s service plan if there is an assessment score change in any way, treatment requirements, ability to self-administer medication, and a comprehensive mental and physical assessment. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include staff who have passed a Board of nursing program may administer medications, residents’ ability to self-administer must be reviewed at least quarterly by a licensed health professionall, and medication administration. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. a licensed nutritionist or licensed dietician must review menus on a 4- week cycle for nutritional quality programs must also provide special diets as ordered by a physician or needed by residents There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. Staff members receive education in a number of subjects. These areas include basic food safety, including standard precautions, state-approved, 5-hour training on cognitive impairment and mental illness, and the use of service plans.
