An assisted living community is a residential living community which administers supervision, care, and aid to self-sufficient persons who do not need skilled nursing support. Assisted living communities usually offer supervision of care, assistance with transit and appointments, and aid with daily activities. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide skilled nursing care, dementia care, or “aging in place”. In Maine, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $62,031 . The state of Maine maintains specific standards related to this kind of community. The Maine Department of Health and Human Services supervises this community type. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance with activities of daily living, housekeeping services, chore services, and other services identified in a service plan. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include at least one nutritious meal a day must be provided, a registered dietician must approve menus annually, the maintenance of a medication record for each resident, and therapeutic diets are considered treatments and must be ordered in writing, by a duly authorized licensed practitioner. Public assistance is available through Medicaid MaineCare State Plan and the MaineCare 1915(c) Elderly Waiver program. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as residents need to be reassessed at least every 6 months thereafter and residents need to be assessed within 30 calendar days of admission. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include medication administration, observing residents taking their medications, and residents must be assessed for their need for assistance. Staff are required to obtain education in a number of areas. These areas include The licensee must attend any training sessions that the Department determines are necessary to meet licensing standards and the administrator must attend any training sessions mandated by the department.
