Assisted living communities offer social events, oversight, and healthcare to persons around 65 years of age or older. The services provided often involve support with the activities of daily life. Residents may be kept under monitoring and evaluation. In select cases, communities may provide respite, hospice, or skilled nursing. In Indiana, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around 49,200. The state of Indiana maintains a number of provisions associated with this kind of community. Indiana State Department of Health regulates this community type. Staff members receive training in a variety of fields. These areas include resident’s rights, fire and disaster preparedness, ethical considerations, and first-aid. communities must consider residents’ personal preference meals may temporarily be delivered to the resident’s room. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must consider residents’ ethnic preferences, communities must consider residents’ reasonable religious preferences, communities must provide three meals a day, and meals must provide a balanced distribution of the daily nutritional requirements. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as A comprehensive assessment, a negotiated risk plan will be established, evaluation must be updated at least semi-annually or when a significant change in condition occurs, and community will identify scope of care based on evaluation. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include distribution of prescribed medications, resident must be observed for effects of medications and undesirable effects must be documented and the resident’s physician notified, and Medications may be administered under physician’s order by licensed nursing personnel or qualified medication aides. Public assistance is available through Medicaid A&D and TBI 1915(c) Waiver program. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include scheduled transportation for community-based activities, executing a minor regimen based upon a nursing diagnosis or as prescribed by a physician, physician’s assistant, chiropractor, dentist, optometrist, podiatrist, or nurse practitioner, activities and programs appropriate to residents’ abilities and interests, and a nursing diagnosis.
