Assisted Living

An assisted living community is a residential living community which provides aid, supervision, and care to independent seniors who do not need skilled nursing care. Services provided often involve support with activities of daily living. Residents may be kept under supervision and evaluation. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer “aging in place”, skilled nursing care, or hospice. In Illinois, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $50,040 . Illinois has specific rules related to this type of community. The Illinois Department of Public Health supervises this type of community. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as provider must ensure that the resident and the resident’s representative, if any, are informed of the potential consequences of activities that the provider considers to pose risks to health and/or safety, evaluation of a prospective resident’s cognitive condition, evaluation of a prospective resident’s physical condition, and assessment must be updated by a physician annually or upon a significant change in condition. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include medication reminders, security, supervision of self-administered medications, and emergency response systems. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 3. There is a maximum occupancy of 1 residents per room. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include only a licensed health care professionall employed by the community may administer medications, supervision of self-administered medications, and reading the medication label to residents. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide three daily meals. Staff must receive training in a number of fields. These include: independence, abuse, neglect prevention, and residents’ need and service plans. Public assistance is available through A Medicaid 1915(c) waiver called the Supported Living Program and a 1915(b) waiver called the Managed Long-Term Services and Supports program.
