An assisted living community is a residential community which offers supervision, support, and care to independent persons who are not in need of skilled nursing care. Assisted living communities commonly provide care supervision, opportunities for leisurely activity, and assistance with the activities of daily life. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer hospice, “aging in place”, or respite. In Illinois, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $50,040 . Illinois maintains specific standards associated with this type of community. The Illinois Department of Public Health governs this type of community. Staff are required to obtain training in a number of areas. These include: philosophy and goals, promotion of dignity, internal policies, and independence. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include documenting whether or not the resident took the medication, medication administration, and medication reminders. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide three daily meals. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as A comprehensive assessment, evaluation of a prospective resident’s cognitive condition, assessment must be updated by a physician annually or upon a significant change in condition, and evaluation of a prospective resident’s physical condition. Public assistance is available through A Medicaid 1915(c) waiver called the Supported Living Program and a 1915(b) waiver called the Managed Long-Term Services and Supports program. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every residents. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 3. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. The maximum occupancy is 1 residents per room. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include medication administration, security, assistance with activities of daily living, and non-medical services.
