Assisted Living

An assisted living community is a residential living community which offers support, care, and supervision to independent seniors who are not in need of skilled nursing support. The services provided often involve assistance with ADLs. Inhabitants may be kept under supervision and assessment. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer hospice, skilled nursing care, or “aging in place”. In Illinois, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $50,040 . Illinois maintains a number of provisions related to this kind of community. The Illinois Department of Public Health certifies this community type. Staff must receive education in a number of fields. These areas include infection control, privacy, promotion of dignity, and neglect prevention. There must be one bath or shower for every residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 3. In total, there can be no more than 1 residents to a room. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as A comprehensive assessment, evaluation of a prospective resident’s physical condition, assessment must be updated by a physician annually or upon a significant change in condition, and evaluation of a prospective resident’s cognitive condition. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include documenting whether or not the resident took the medication, medication administration, and medication reminders. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include laundry, medication reminders, emergency response systems, and security. Public assistance is available through A Medicaid 1915(c) waiver called the Supported Living Program and a 1915(b) waiver called the Managed Long-Term Services and Supports program. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide three daily meals.
