Assisted living communities offer residential communities and health care to persons who require support with everyday activities such as dressing or showering. Services provided often include assistance with activities of daily living. Residents may be kept under monitoring and evaluation. In certain cases, communities may provide nursing care, hospice, or “aging in place”. In Illinois, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $50,040 . Illinois has specific standards associated with this kind of community. The Illinois Department of Public Health governs this type of community. Public assistance is available through A Medicaid 1915(c) waiver called the Supported Living Program and a 1915(b) waiver called the Managed Long-Term Services and Supports program. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every residents. The maximum occupancy is 1 residents per room. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 3. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide three daily meals. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include observing the resident, supervision of self-administered medications, and reading the medication label to residents. Staff members receive education in a variety of areas. These areas include confidentiality, infection control, hygiene, and privacy. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as evaluation of a prospective resident’s psychosocial condition, evaluation of a prospective resident’s physical condition, A comprehensive assessment, and assessment must be updated by a physician annually or upon a significant change in condition. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include medication administration, laundry, assistance with activities of daily living, and supervision of self-administered medications.
