An assisted living community is a residential community which administers care, assistance, and supervision to healthy seniors who do not need skilled nursing services. The types of service offered often include support with ADLs. Occupants may be kept under monitoring and evaluation. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer respite, hospice, or dementia care. In Illinois, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $50,040 . The state of Illinois maintains specific regulations associated with this type of community. The Illinois Department of Public Health supervises this type of community. Staff members receive training in a variety of fields. These include: hygiene, reporting, privacy, and residents’ need and service plans. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as provider must ensure that the resident and the resident’s representative, if any, are informed of the potential consequences of activities that the provider considers to pose risks to health and/or safety, A comprehensive assessment, evaluation of a prospective resident’s physical condition, and assessment must be updated by a physician annually or upon a significant change in condition. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 3. There must be one bath or shower for every residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. There is a maximum occupancy of 1 residents per room. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include housekeeping, non-medical services, emergency response systems, and supervision of self-administered medications. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include reading the medication label to residents, documenting whether or not the resident took the medication, and medication administration. Public assistance is available through A Medicaid 1915(c) waiver called the Supported Living Program and a 1915(b) waiver called the Managed Long-Term Services and Supports program. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide three daily meals.
