Assisted Living

Assisted living communities provide healthcare, social opportunities, and supervision to individuals around 65 years of age or older. The types of service provided often involve support with activities of daily living. Inhabitants may be kept under supervision and evaluation. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer dementia care, nursing, or respite. In Georgia, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $135,450 . The state of Georgia has specific regulations associated with this type of community. The Department of Community Health licenses assisted living communities and personal care homes certifies this community type. Staff members obtain training in a variety of areas. These include: emergency preparedness, reporting requirements, exploitation of a resident, and including the special needs of residents with dementia. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include applying topical medications, assisting residents with self-administration, and communities must assist residents with self-administration if requested. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include at least three meals, one nutritious snack, and any therapeutic diets ordered by a resident’s health care provider must be provided each day. Public assistance is available through 1915(c) Medicaid Waiver programs- ) the Community Care Services Program is managed by the Department of Community Health’s Division of Medical Assistance Plans and partners with the Division of Aging Services and the Service Options Using Resources in a Community Environment (SOURCE) program. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include the provision of assisted self-preservation, described as personal services, assisted living care, and administration of medications by a certified medication aide. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as assessment to determine the resident’s functional capacity with regard to ADLs, assessment to determine the resident’s medical needs, assessment to determine the residents cognitive and behavioral impairments, and care plan must be updated at least annually and when there is a change in the resident’s needs. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 25. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day.
