Assisted Living

An assisted living community is an organized living community which administers support, assistance, and care to self-sufficient seniors who do not require skilled nursing services. Services provided often include support with ADLs. Occupants may be kept under monitoring and evaluation. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide skilled nursing, continuing care, or dementia care. In Georgia, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $135,450 . Georgia maintains specific regulations related to this type of community. The Department of Community Health licenses assisted living communities and personal care homes licenses this type of community. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include at least three meals, one nutritious snack, and any therapeutic diets ordered by a resident’s health care provider must be provided each day. Staff members obtain education in a variety of fields. These include: 24 hours of continuing education during the first year and 16 hours annually thereafter, provision of resident care that is individualized and helpful, emergency first-aid and CPR, and hand hygiene. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include assisting with an Epi pen, applying topical medications, and communities must assist residents with self-administration if requested. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assisted living care, administration of medications by a certified medication aide, the provision of assisted self-preservation, and described as personal services. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as A written care plan must document the assessment findings, personal preferences relative to care needs, assessment to determine the residents cognitive and behavioral impairments, and whether family supports are available. Public assistance is available through 1915(c) Medicaid Waiver programs- ) the Community Care Services Program is managed by the Department of Community Health’s Division of Medical Assistance Plans and partners with the Division of Aging Services and the Service Options Using Resources in a Community Environment (SOURCE) program. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 25. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day.
