Assisted Living

Assisted living communities have the luxury of a sense of community as well as personalized help. The types of service provided often include help with the activities of daily life. Residents may be kept under monitoring and evaluation. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide nursing care, respite, or hospice. In Florida, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around 42,000. Florida maintains a number of provisions associated with this type of community. The Bureau of Health community Regulation certifies this community type. Staff members obtain education in a variety of fields. These areas include universal precautions, community sanitation procedures, 12 hours of continuing education every 2 years on topics related to assisted living, and infection control. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include nursing services, personal care services, assistance with self-administration of medications, and assistance with activities of daily living . Public assistance is available through 1915(b)(c) MLTC program. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 1. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as communities must document such assessment, community must document any substantial changes in a resident’s status which may necessitate relocation to a more specialized community , monthly nursing assessment of resident as ordered by physician , and medical examination report. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include meals must be adapted to residents physical abilities , the community must provide therapeutic diets as ordered by the resident’s health care provider for residents who require special diets, the community must provide a variety of regular meals that meet the nutritional needs of residents, and meals must be adapted to residents preferences. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include staff may take previously dispensed, properly labeled containers from where they are stored and bringing them to the resident, licensed nursing staff may administer medications, and unlicensed staff may assist residents with self-administration.
