Assisted Living

Assisted living communities offer coordinated social events and apartment style housing as well as individual care. Assisted living communities usually provide care supervision, assistance with daily activities, and chances for organized activity. In some situations, communities may offer dementia care, skilled nursing care, or “aging in place”. In California, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $54,000 . The state of California has a number of stipulations related to this kind of community. The Department of Social Services, Community Care Licensing Division regulates this type of community. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. Public assistance is available through The state’s Medicaid 1915(c) Assisted Living Waiver program. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include meals must include an appropriate variety of foods, planned in consideration of cultural and religious backgrounds , meals must comply with residents’ dietary preference, the total daily diet must meet the recommended dietary allowances of the National Academy of Sciences Food and Nutrition Board, and meals must comply with diet prescribed by physicians. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include medication administration and assistance with self-administration of medications. Staff members receive training in a number of fields. These areas include need for professionall help, knowledge required to safely assist with prescribed medications, knowledge of community services and resources, and medication policies and procedures.
