Assisted living communities administer recreational activities, supervision, and care to people around 65 years old. Assisted living communities commonly offer help with transit and appointments, opportunities for leisurely activity, and support with the activities of daily life. Staff are required to receive training in a variety of areas. These include: confidentiality, a 20-hour classroom training program, advance directives, and basic first-aid. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 2. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include medical attention or nursing services, coordination of medical transportation, medication services, and housekeeping. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as medical examination by a physician prior to admission and plan of care developed by the community in cooperation with the resident and, if appropriate, their representative.
