The largest city in eastern Alabama, Auburn is a historic college town filled with Southern charm and culture. The Auburn University Campus offers year round arts and cultural opportunities from both students and professional artists. At the center of the arts scene is the Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art which features a large collection of works from the 18th and 19th century. The museum also houses works by Georgia O’keeffe, John Audubon, Dali, Picasso, and Matisse. Also located on the university campus is the Donald E. Davis Arboretum which features a vast collection of native plants. The Arboretum plays an integral part in conserving local biodiversity. For those who enjoy the outdoors, the Chewacla State Park has a number of trails and a scenic lake. Chewacla also features the region’s largest waterfall. The Tuskegee National Forest is also a popular destination for outdoor activities. The park is noted for being home to wild deer and other wildlife.
Fans of the performing arts can enjoy performances at one of the city’s small theaters and venues. The Telfair Peet Theatre puts on numerous performances throughout the year. There are also a number of orchestras and bands based in the city including the Auburn Highschool Honors Band, the Auburn Community Orchestra, and the various bands and orchestras of Auburn University.
Although the city does not have any professional teams, Auburn is famous for being a sports town. The local favorites are the Auburn University Tigers whose football and basketball games bring in thousands of tailgaters and sports fans every home game.
