An assisted living community is a residential community which provides support, care, and aid to healthy seniors who do not need skilled nursing support. The types of service provided often include aid with the activities of daily life. Inhabitants may be kept under monitoring and evaluation. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as medical examination by a physician prior to admission and plan of care developed by the community in cooperation with the resident and, if appropriate, their representative. Staff are required to obtain training in a variety of areas. These include: needs of the elderly, mentally ill, and intellectually disabled, applicable rules and statutes, 19 years of age, and fire and environmental safety. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include self-administration of medication if capable. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 2. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents.
