A Nice Place to Live

I'm still settling in, but so far it's nice. They have lots of different activities, which is nice - things like Supper Club with 4-course meals, outings, happy hour, etc. But generally when I'm out and about, I don't see people. They have beautiful grounds outside and picnic tables, and I never see anybody using them. The apartment is fine for me, just one person. And the staff have been very nice and helpful. They're easy to talk to. I like it here.

quiet readjustment

I would advise others to definitely look at other options, because in terms of price compared to others, The Gardens of Annapolis is on the higher end in terms of rent. if you are on a fixed income, that would b something you'd need to take into consideration. in terms of convenience location, it is extremely convenient because its located directly across the street from a shopping center. I would also tell others to check the demographics of this community. I didn't realize how important that was before moving my loved one in. meeting friends and making connections can be difficult if there aren't many people who look like your loved one. making a true connection has been a challenge, and its not the communities fault - it's just difficult to form a true connection with someone that you cant relate to. I know because of HIPPA laws they cant disclose certain information and I and respect that, but I would advise others to spend time there and get a feel for what its like before moving in. we are trying to recreate a comfortable life for someone who has left a spot that they've lived at for 60+ years; that can be proven tough when its hard to make significant relationships in your new home. overall I would recommend them to others. it's a nice community with fantastic staff. the apartment unit is great for my loved one and was something they were able to adjust into. the cleanliness of the community can't be beat. there are pockets of time during the day where it is very quiet and the residents are tucked away in their rooms or elsewhere. my loved one likes to talk and mingle with people, so that has been a challenge as well. I know that my loved one likes the place, they seem to be adjusting and doing fine. I just know that one of their challenges has been the lack of true friendship and meaningful connection. The Gardens is a great place, there are just things that you should pay attention to and invest your focus into during your discovery process. I didn't notice the particular demographic or lack of diversity until after we moved my loved one in.

High Level of Privacy, Good Community

I would recommend the community and for you to move in. The cleanliness of the community stands out to me. The staff are very good to work with if you have questions or concerns. Bingo, monthly parties, tennis association, contests, and more are some of the activities for the residents to choose from.

Looks good from the outside, problems inside.

The staff is good, and they try do their best. They're friendly. But the property is older and having problems because of that. The air conditioning is failing, and my loved one has been without air conditioning for a month. The appliances are breaking down, and they can't get the necessary supplies - same with AC. They just lost their food service company, so they'll be without food until they hire a new company, and the residents will have to fend for themselves. Without the meals provided for them, there's not much point in being there. From the outside it looks great. The inside is beautiful and they maintain it well. But the value has really gone down with the food issues. Especially because on top of rent, you have to pay for electricity, internet, cleaning, and meal plans, with an extra charge for choosing food options other than the dish of the day.

One of the four facilities I favored. Many residents were younger seniors, and costs were somewhat less than many of the other facilities. Had most of the usual amenities, with some services provided at an additional charge.

Not many amenities available

I toured here when looking for a place to live and just from the short time that I was there, they were nice. The director that took me on the tour was able to answer my questions and was knowledgeable about the facility. As I recall, the community itself was very attractive, though there weren’t that many amenities available. I was looking for something a bit closer to my family and places that I volunteer at so that was one of the only reasons why I didn’t choose them.

Great experience

Schaffer Heights is a great match for my Mom. We were very happy with bldg staff and how easy it was to get everything settled to move her in right away. The building is very nice, the apt. is very cute and just the right size for a one bedroom. Catholic charities and office of the aging is right in the building so it is easy to set up services like transportation. They also offer cooked meals( for a charge) a few times a week. The meals are great and large portions. The rent is affordable and the staff is very friendly.

Schaffer Heights experience-good

My parents have lived here for a few years now. Schaffer Heights has a full calendar of in-house and off site events, buses to two major grocery stores, monthly trips to area malls, and a community room for movie night and social events. An in-house food service sells and delivers wonderful hot meals twice a week and offers a menu of hot and cold breakfast items in the community room on Mondays. There is a spot within each apartment for W/D, but there is also a laundry room on each floor. A trash room on each floor has a trash chute and a place for recyclables. Maintenance is on top of things in the building. There is an on-site adult day care center. The first three floors are county offices related to the aging, caregivers, elder abuse, etc. There is an attorney who volunteers his time once a week to residents. There is a hairdresser that also comes to the building once a week or so. There is someone at the security desk 24/7. Price for 2 BR with balcony $896. One bedroom apartments are obviously less. The only drawback to the building is that there is only one small community room which tends to be in use a lot of the time. There is no place for the residents to congregate except in the public lobby. The residents also do not have access to a bank.
