Silverado Senior Living

We used this facility for a respite stay for a loved one. The facility itself was nice, and the staff all seemed very friendly. However, we had some issues regarding the care my loved one received, I believe the staff could have been a bit more careful and gentle.

There were first stay problems that the administration and staff were very responsible to address.

It's really expensive. We went in there under the impression that it was going to be a lot different than it is. Mom has never really been comfortable in a room there. I think the only way she would have been comfortable is in a room by herself but we can't afford that. They said they would take her up to the fourth floor for activites but they never did; they just left her in her room. It hasn't worked out for us and we don't really know what to do about it. No matter what we do it just gets worse. We're contemplating moving into an apartment and having home care instead.

Lunch was delicious! 3 meals/day is a perk! Very close to dwntn Berkeley. Place is a boutique style, very small. 1-bedroom's are too small even. Feels a bit depressing for Mom and she's aware of the age difference from herself (as she has at most others)

We were considering this one, but find it too dark.

We really liked it, and the staff was very caring.

I toured several weeks ago. Pros: independent, assisted and dementia levels of care; several "with it" men; lots of activities; and a youthful feel to the place compared to Aegis of PH above. Also in Berkeley which from where I live now is great. Cons: facility older; not so nice but OK; in an urban setting with a very limited outdoor area. Residents with dementia hanging around the front desk. Pricing pretty good, though studios seem small. Dad may prefer the hotter, dryer climate in Contra Costa County. Will keep this one on the list to re-visit.

Nice, but I get more of a nursing home vibe from the setting. Rep says it has a "Berkeley vibe" which my mom would like a lot.

I visited the Silverado Senior Care facility, purportedly the "Cadillac" of Memory Care/Assisted Living facilities in Southern California. The first thing I noticed when I walked in was a distinctive and somewhat unpleasant smell. Not urine, but something that just didn't set well with me but I can't really describe or identify the odor (could be residual cleaning chemicals). On the up side, this is a large facility that focuses on the individual resident's strengths and challenges, and they address each accordingly. LOTS of activities geared for the abilities and limitations for the residents. There are several pets on site (some belonging to the residents, some for "pet therapy") including bunnies, birds, cats, dogs and a couple of horses. The facility is quite large and includes a beautiful outdoor area and pool (I think---getting confused now). There are also walking trails (all secured) along with walking clubs, a fitness facility and music and dance options, just to mention a few. Also, they have a dedicated Psychiatrist and Gerontologist that visit the facility at least once a week to provide assessments and follow-up care. They also provide 24-hour on-site nursing staff to aid with falls, illnesses, etc. They offer end of life care (hospice) and the only treatment they don't provide on site, which would require transfer to a hospital, is IV and intubation. Day care (flex) and short term resident (respite) care is available too. The room was nice with lots of closet space, not particularly large but comfy. I found out that the "shared rooms" are the same size as the "private" rooms. and how they would fit two twin beds into that space is beyond me! I had an allergic reaction (not severe, but certainly uncomfortable) after about an hour at the facility--which may be due to the pets (especially the cats, to which I am highly allergic!) and likely the reason for the unpleasant (to me) smell.

Due to a recent major management change(resignations) in top management/administration and the head nurse (no replacements yet hired), the care of the residents has fallen to a very poor level in terms of hygiene and administration of necessary medications. Some residents have become ill due to improper med dosages and skin diseases due to the lack of showers being given. If Autumn Leaves does not remedy the above problems, we will have to move our cared one elsewhere. We are certainly not getting the service value for the monthly cost we pay. Autumn Leave Corporate must remedy the above issues ASAP for the well-being of its residents.

Silverado is a large facility to include assisted living as well as memory care. Upon beginning my tour, I noted the facility was in dire need of upgrading and appeared to be very dated as to decor and upkeep. I also noted a strange odor that permeated the facility. I met a lot of staff, all the staff seemed to be warm, kind, and caring. There is a lot of programs to include gardening and livestock, i.e. goats, chickens, miniature horses. The grounds are quite large. Other activity programs include dance, art, yoga fit and sit and a wide range of other outdoor outings. The rooms are small and very dated, it would be unlikely my parent could place any of her personal things in rooms that tiny, especially for the amount of money the facility charged for month to month care. The particular suite the Silverado manager wanted my parent to share with another resident was adequate, however the current resident had taken over 90% of the room with oversized furniture and wall to wall shelving. This resident had a family wall portrait that took up the entire length of the room. I was told the current resident could push their possessions over to make room for my parent. This was unacceptable to me as I felt it was completely unreasonable to press this matter with me as my only vacancy option, I found this to be insulting. Further, there was no way the current resident was going to willing share their space with my parent. The price point was way higher than I expected, especially based on the age and condition of the facility. The community deposit was the highest of all the facilities I toured. Given that coupled with the dated premises and no real vacancy this facility was not an option. I would not consider it or recommend it. Silverado needs to invest in upgrading these premises.

While Peter was very helpful and friendly I did find the facility to meet my and my wife's needs at this time.

Overall I am not impressed with Silverado Beverly Place. It's okay if all you are looking for is somewhere to meet basic physical and care needs. They look after and feed their residents well enough. However I have found everything beyond that very lacking. They only bathe the residents twice a week, and do very little in the way of grooming. I always ask them to make sure my loved one's facial hair is kept neat, and they say it has been done, but often when I visit it is obvious no attention has been paid to it. I feel like they show you a higher level of service on the tours than they actually provide.

I had a negative experience with this senior care facility, which I believe did not appropriately meet the needs of my loved one. The facility admitted my family member despite their physical health and mobility not aligning with the facility's focus on bedridden or hospice care. I observed that the staff relied heavily on antipsychotic medications shortly after admission, with limited consideration for alternative therapies or support for emotional distress. The living conditions were also disappointing. The rooms felt cramped, with small twin beds and minimal storage space. During my visits, I noticed that common areas were largely empty, and there was no staff presence at the front desk during business hours. My loved one expressed a desire to leave the facility, but their concerns were not addressed. This created a distressing environment for them, compounded by what I perceived as a lack of individualized care and attention.

Accounting and higher management are non existent. They do not have enough people. Their lack of people and management of the situation directly caused the downfall of my father in a matter of months.

I know my mother was a difficult case with frequent falls, but I felt like they asked she be placed on Hospice rapidly (after saying a month prior they often wondered why she was there) so someone else was responsible for her care. Additionally, the last month, I had to pay for private duty to watch her because of her frequent falls. I realize this was a memory center. But I felt they were more concerned with patient activities rather than patient care. I felt they just pocketed at least 3/4 of the over [amount removed] a month I was paying, and turned care to Hospice and private duty. They rarely had enough staff, and several times, going there for lunch. I saw several residents which were unable to feed themselves not getting fed.

Horrible. The staff does not communicate with each other. They don't help the patients eat that need help, no one to one attention. Everyday i had to check the medications to see if the right dose and what the dr ordered! They ordered a expectorant and given only 1st day. He passed away the 4th day because they never sent over his history. Very bad place. I hope it helps some people. They call themselves the best in vegas!!!

The only reason they are getting 2 stars is for a hand full of staff members that went above and beyond for my uncle who has gone on to greener pastures. I have visited all hours of the day experiencing all staff. Let's start with the good. It will be short. There are 1 or 2 nurses that actually interact with the residents besides giving pills. The good nurses never stay. There are maybe 3 or 4 caregivers that care and are properly trained. The food is for the most part good and the place is usually clean. Moving on to the bad. Unrealistic promises are made as soon as you walk thru the door by a non medical staff member who is clearly paid on commission. They are often short staffed which is obvious by the disheveled look on many staff members faces until they realize your present then an attempt at a fake smile is quickly produced. The Dhs [name removed] is quite cold and impersonal. Has been seen fleeing the scene when it gets crazy to leave the already burnt out staff to deal with it. There are residents who are violent and should be in mental facilities but in order to keep that money flowing they are left here for the poor staff to get beat up on or even worse other residents. They don't control residents from going in wrong rooms stealing items. Nurses seem detached only focusing on giving pills and sitting in the office. The 1 or 2 nurses and caregivers that did interact with the residents unfortunately have left. Or been pushed out. Very sad. Obviously those who don't follow corporate protocol and stand up for what's right for the residents have no place here. Last but definitely not least activities... sitting at a table speaking Spanish about family issues with one or 2 residents at a table isn't activities. I believe an entire family works here. Sisters, husband, cousins. Very unprofessional! And in the evening's non existent. I have even witnessed a husband/ wife? Boyfriend/ girlfriend? who both work here arguing in a common area. Outings are often not properly staffed or attended with any medical staff. But hey their calendar looks good and that's what's important right? Yeah the animals are great if they live. I used to enjoy the rabbits but was informed they died from no water. Inhumane! Ok if i haven't convinced you by now this place puts on a great show but don't be fooled it's all smoke and mirrors.

The facility was well maintained but I did not see real engagement with their charges.

We were there in the facility and saw that it was warm and fuzzy and a very lively place. The staff is terrific, very dedicated, and I very much enjoyed speaking with them. That said, when we went to visit my aunt after a few weeks being in there, we were very dismayed. When she went in there she was very energetic, but when we went to visit her two weeks later she had lost a lot of weight, had an infection in her elbow, and had gone downhill mentally in a very short time. As much as I swallowed what they fed in the initial sales pitch and tour, I cannot overlook what I have seen since then. I am concerned. It is possible that we were the exception to the rule and overall they do an excellent job for everyone else, but I can't overlook what I saw.
