My parents are residents here and it's been a good experience so far. It's very clean, staff is good, and they have activities available. They're also pet friendly!

Tour experience

We toured with Canterfield of Fort Myers and they gave us a good tour. The location was just too far for our family. We also did not feel that the staff were as attentive as we would have liked during the whole touring process. We also did not get any follow up from them after the fact.

Staffing seem to have issue to keeping staff around, high turnover rate. If can get this issue corrected, believe it will be much better. Overall would say that for what it is, it is not perfect but they certainly try their best to make it a great experience.

Good Memory Care

My loved one was moved into the memory care section of the facility and I can say that they are getting the appropriate amount of care. The staff is knowledgeable and they know what they are doing. Their doctor comes by once a week to give my loved one checkup and they receive physical therapy. They do a good job keeping the facility nice and neat. Housekeeping assists with the resident’s laundry once a week and frequently takes out the trash. The activities are posted on a calendar to let everyone know what is going on. There is bingo, my loved one has gone to church, and they have bus trips for planned outings. Every Friday there is a happy hour where tenants can drink beer and cocktails. The only drawback I would say about this place is their telephone situation. They have a voice coverage message on their phone line from 8:00am to 8:30pm. After the message plays, the most you can do is just leave a voicemail. This is concerning because what if there is an emergency. Aside from this, the facility is very nice.

Canterfield of Oak Ridge - A Place for Everyone

I had a few issues with their care services. They told me they were going to change his prescription because; they had him on a bunch of anti-psychotics and it took them 6 months and they're just now starting to check it out. So they didn't follow through with it. My dad couldn't walk because they didn't cut his toe nails. I know insurance only covers for it to be done once every four months. I told them I'd pay for that, so that he can walk. He complains about pain in his feet and it seemed like a simple fix. They chose not to do it, because they knew what the problem was. Cost wise, they are a little higher than some of them, but a lot of them looking for easy patients and he isn't one when he gets riled up. A lot of places wouldnt take him because he was refusing meds, but that's apart of dementia. It's a good overall place, but it depends on how your loved one is. If they are an easy going person, there would probably be better places out there because they wont push. If you're looking for a place that has a wing for memory care and assisted living, there are several different levels there. If you're looking for a place where you don't want to move facilities as your loved ones progresses through dementia, then this would be a good place and I'm pretty tough on places. You can put anywhere in here, whether it's for dementia or assisted living. They have a place for every level; so if he needs to go into total bedridden care, they can accommodate that. It's a full meal-deal place, they can house pretty much everything an elderly person is going through. This is based off of their testimonies as my dad has only been in their memory care.

Our famiies experience

While the cost is great compared to other states, we were not happy with the overall care our loved one received. My MIL was left in wet dirty diapers for to long which had caused bad rashes. The staff on the weekends was very poor. They couldn't find help many times. The staff constantly took our loved ones diapers, wipes and bed liners and would use them with the other residents. We would stock her drawers and the next day they would be gone. We actually saw the staff take them and walk to other rooms. I think my MIL gave up and she was not happy there. She had been in good health and all of a sudden was crying and so unhappy that she eventually went on hospice and passed the next day. I honestly think they are much better places to put a parent that needs the memory care side of a facility. I get it that it is hard to keep a good place staffed. I see that with our dads place too in CA. However the staff here is always kind and caring with him. I do think it is a nice facility but it is not run well and understaffed. Some staff are truly great but others were mean to her and she had bruises on her legs from the way they would grab her and put her in bed. She was not weight bearing.

Be Hands On With Your Loved One

I would highly recommend being hands on and being there often if you put your loved one here. They do provide a doctor, but the care could be a lot better. They're supposed to provide a manicure every week, but when we've been there her fingernails have been filthy and we've had to clean them ourselves. They're not changing her and keeping her dry like they should, so she's had several UTIs. The tables were dirty. It was 3:00 in the afternoon, and there was still lunch and dishes and messy crumbs all over the table. I know they're having a hard time keeping help there. The food looked like goulash, and our loved one wouldn't touch it. Activities are mediocre. We were impressed when she first moved in. Everything was clean and immaculate. They had just opened, so there were only a few residents there. The girl who worked with us was really nice and friendly. But now, the other staff are not. Everybody looks really sad, and I don't see any joy. Our loved one is crying and wants to come home. The residents look stressed and unhappy as well.

Not overly impressed.

Staff moves about with purpose. Some more attentive than others. One, [name removed] I believe, is rude and very aloof. Doesn't do much, this according to my family.

Serious Medicine management issues

My mother has lived at Canterfield for 3½ years and she is in assisted living with Canterfield providing complete management of medicines for additional fee of $XXX [amount removed] a month.. We have had serious problems, repeatedly, with them NOT giving her needed medications. Blood thinners were just not given and blaming it on the pharmacy not getting them any refills and no one ever followed up. Another time, desperately needed glaucoma Rx eyedrops had not been refilled nor given for MONTHS resulting in permanent deterioration of her vision noticeable by her ophthalmologist, which is what prompted us to check and find out those were also just not refilled and given to her.. even though the pharmacy shows 4 refills available. Communication with Canterfield is a huge struggle. Even after they assure us they will resolve the problem, next month, still no eyedrops are being given. We are in process of filing a report with Tennessee State Health Commission.

I have lived here about a year. I know of 5 residents who are having trouble not getting the care they need. These residents need help bathing and getting dressed, but when they call for help no one responds to help them. Canterfield is understaffed. They also are having trouble keeping help. I have a loved one who hires her to and is having problems getting help when she needs it.

We dropped in on a Sunday afternoon for a tour. The conceirge was nice, but she was not familiar with some of the fundamentals such as staff/resident ratio. This place seems more like a mid level hotel than a home. One distracting thing for me was the cheap carpet with virtually no padding in the resident rooms. The place is brand new but there were some areas that we not cleaned such as low traffic areas.

Needs Lots of Improvements

This is not what was advertised and what we signed a contract for. It is a brand new place so I'm going to give them a chance to fix things. Nothing is functioning the way its supposed to. They have a spas and that has never worked. They have a beauty salon but no beautician. They have an exercise room that they keep locked and are told we can't use unless we have supervision. Which there is no staff they cut back on the staff because there aren't enough residents yet. They told us they had restaurant style set up for the meals and they had a Veterans Day banquet and we got all the leftovers from that for a week. And they don't have any options. They had a gazebo and the hurricane ruined it and still haven't replaced it. So all the residents sit out front in wheelchairs and in gowns, Not a good first impression for visitors. I would expect better hygiene for all the residents. It is a beautiful place I just hope what was advertised come out soon. Feels like a nursing home and its not.

let down

re: memory care (after 20+ visits) staff spend most of the time talking among themselves and ignoring residents speaking to them...residents spend a great deal of time watching t.v. with staff not in close proximity... residents are not engaged or encouraged by staff to participate in the the few activities offered...most important though, residents hygiene is questionable... on a positive note...food is deicious...

Don't waste your time or money

After 20+ visits...Very disappointing...memory care staff stands around talking to one another at length...resident's hygiene needs are met minimally at best..they spend most of the day in front of the TV with very little interaction between staff and residents...unless you have endless funds and little concern for your loved one, I'd look elsewhere...

Nothing is what it seems at Canterfield of Clay. The price they quote you at is by far the bottom line. They charge you for EVERYTHING! Cant make it to the dinning room THEY CHARGE YOU! 1 mile over on medical appt. THEY CHARGE YOU! Need a little more asst from staff THEY CHARGE YOU! They try to drain you bank account IMMEDIATELY after moving in. The staff is young and childish. They consistently play at night throughout the halls LOUDLY and are never available when needed. The food is by far the worst! You never know for certain what the soup of the day is let alone what the meals are. Terrible job posting daily meals. Dont get sucked into having you life savings sucked out of you by these volutures!

Over priced, understaffed, and medical staff can’t do their job

They are understaffed, you pay to much for nothing they say they have. They don’t monitor their residents, they don’t clean and when you complain, they get your bedding stuff and never return with clean ones, then they make excuses that their understaffed. The nurse told us that our aunt was in bed all day and she has been keeping an eye out, but the desk clerk and othe employees said she has been up and dressed all day and has had two meals that day. She came down and was fully dressed and ready. The staff talks amongst theirselves and ignored a man falling out of his wheelchair chair. This place is a joke and needs to be reported. My Aunt has been removed and in a more managed place.
