My sister is in memory care and she loves it. She has Dementia and sometimes she is not the same character, but they just deal with it. I would recommend this facility to family and friends.

Good Community for the Most Part

My mother is doing pretty well with her move to this community. The location of the community is very convenient for me to travel to. For the most part I know she is safe, and receiving good care. Most of the staff is good, they are kind, helpful. Everything is working in a positive direction for us here at this community, and I would recommend it.

My Aunt Likes It Here, She Is Doing Well

My aunt really likes it here at this community. She has adjusted well to it, and I'am satisfied with her move here. I know she is being cared for well, they have a wonderful staff here. They are very friendly and helpful. There activities available for her when she is ready to participate. She is pleased with the meals. It's a nice looking community, they do a good job with the cleanliness. They have great room options. I would recommend this community, it is a great place.

More of a "retirement" community

It was really nice, what we had decided though was number one, my daughter in laws mother couldn't afford it and it ended up being pretty far away. Most of it was like a retirement with people that were able to care for themselves so it really wasn't the right place for her.

Review for Karolwood Gardens Norfolk

Staff has poor communication with families regarding issue/concerns from family. We picked this community for our loved one, because of the rate price lock for life. Nice community , poor communication skills with Director and Nursing staff. I would recommend to other families. The marketing director is fantastic.

The Jury is still out

My loved one lives at this facility and there are still a few issues that we are working on. Her apartment is so much superior to so many other facilities that we looked at and is more affordable. The monthly fee is a flat rate. They were actually so desperate for residents that they gave my loved one a lifetime rate when she signed/moved in. Moving into a facility was a big adjustment for my loved one and I feel like this facility had a less than ideal approach to that. The Executive Director is hard to deal with and very strict, but we've done it. Logically so, but it's been hard to take it all in and act accordingly. The strict setting has been an adjustment, but everyone has adapted. The building had a change of ownership to a private equity company over a year ago and renovations began and are still ongoing. To me, private equity and healthcare do not go together at all. This facility agreed to being able to accommodate a special diet due to the medical needs of my loved one. We're working with her Doctor and the dietician at the facility to be able to find a way to successfully accommodate the special diet, that is still ongoing. They've seemingly gone out of their way to try to accommodate it, but it's been a process and it's still ongoing. I don't think that I would recommend this facility to family and friends, all things considered. Not right now, at least.

Not Family Friendly

My wife was in the Lakewood (Memory Care) section of Province Place of DePaul, with middle to late-stage Alzheimer's. To the caregivers, housekeeping, maintenance, activities, kitchen, all the staff, for their care and service I give an A-plus (5+ stars). They provide excellent, friendly care and service. But concerning Family Relations, I'm assigning the new director a D-minus (1.5 stars), which brings my overall rating for Province Place of DePaul down to only 3.5 stars. I'm assuming that this is the new director's first time overseeing an assisted living facility, and hoping that she will improve with experience. Granted, my wife died on Thanksgiving day, with Friday being another day off for some workers, but refusing to allow a husband to enter Friday and remove needed furniture for out of state relatives arriving for the funeral was, to say the least, not good family relations. And then simply not responding to an emailed request for access on Saturday, Sunday or Monday compounded the offense. My wife's bed could have easily been taken out within about 15 minutes, giving me the needed extra bed at home. As it turned out, though, my son bought a cot so he had a place to sleep after driving all the way from Wisconsin to attend the funeral. Again I say that I only hope experience will improve the director's consideration for family members.

Province Place provided good care for mother. The main complaint I have is that apparently there is a shady deal going on with the pharmacy they use. I received a bill for medicine 5 months after she left for a signifiCan't amount of money. My mom virtually had medicine with no co-pay prior to that. Province did not notify me of this situation.

The residents were scarce - but pleasant, the facility fine, and the staff available to answer questions. My overall feeling seemed to be a less enthusiastic and cohesive spirit visible within the facility and an administration not on equal status as other facilities. I am not sure that I agree with the smaller community concept which I didn't see as a good fit for my relative.

Not As Promised

I would not recommend Karolwood Gardens Norfolk. I would advise going to a more established community. The nursing staff was very accommodating and kind, but the administration was absolutely awful and not accommodating. It was too new and was unable to meet the services of my dad. They were very hard to get ahold of and impatient, and I was extremely disappointed with how they managed my father's care. I felt awfully frustrated because they took in my dad without being able to meet his needs and then kicked him out when it was too much, even though they told us they could care for him.

Lazy and arrogant

The majority of the staff are lazy. There are exceptions such as [names removed]. You can tell they really care. I encountered a “med tech” tonight who claims she is a nurse. I asked her if she could do my mother’s laundry or I volunteered to do it myself. She looked indignant and said she was a “nurse” and she didn’t do that kind of work. All she did was pass meds. She is clearly not a nurse because true nurses will always help a patient — no questions asked. She was very rude and disrespectful. Did not know how to take a blood pressure (a nurse? Really?). So lazy and no pride in her job. I was RN/BSN before I went back to school and now am an MD. I will do anything for a patient. - bathe them, clean them up, change sheets etc. It’s about caring. Something this individual knows nothing about! She needs to go work at Wendy’s or something.

My MOM SUFFERED & still no refund for time not spent there.

My father paid for a full month for my mom to stay here while she was dying. She was not given pain medications when she asked for them & she was suffering greatly from having multiple strokes & a injured leg. They let her lay their for hours until my family threw a fit for them to give her meds because she was crying. She passed about 15 minutes after she finally got her meds. She was in so much pain she could not pass peacefully because of these people that don't pay attention to their patients. Another complaint is this company owes my father a refund for 28 days & he has been given the run around on a refund since February about this. I've been calling on the phone & yesterday they told me they would have a answer for me today. Today I am told the manager is out until [date removed] & I have to call back then. I'm sick of being given the run around by you people. Give my father back his money or you will be talking to my lawyer.

Be an Advocate for Loved One

The experience was a nightmare. There was no one there, who knew what they were doing. They need well trained staff. The food was terrible. There was a situation, in which my loved one needed assistance, and I could not find anyone. This was not a safe place. They did not have my loved one in the system, which was very questionable.

Not recommended

Our experience at this facility was nothing short of a nightmare. The marketing person was great, but she oversold. The room was not clean when we arrived. My loved one said that the care staff yelled at her and mocked her when she had an accident getting to the bathroom. I could go on, but I would prefer to never think of this place ever again.
