Family Response to St. Martha's

St. Martha's struggles with staffing shortages, hiring and delivery of services from an overworked staff. It is impossible for family to get information on their loved ones as phone message boxes are full. St Martha's fails to communicate to family members by newsletter or will simply send an e-mail when a virus emerges. Dining can be another obstacle as many times they do not have enough wait staff to serve or they do not show up. Food shortages can occur and maybe poorly made. Transportation while advertised rarely exists for shopping or medical appointments.

Definitely needs improvement

They are a little lax on the cleanliness of the facility as well as the care. In my opinion, the staff do not give the residents the attention that they need. My experience is with the memory care unit though, so I am not sure what the rest of the facility is like. I think the unit definitely needs some improvements.

Scary

I wouldn't recommend the community to others for their loved ones. The staff wasn't on top of the care that my friend needed. There are no food choices on a menu, it is what is available. Our experience was they weren't able to accommodate special dietary restrictions for our friend.

Concerned - please read before your loved one moves in!

This facility is not affiliated with the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Philadelphia. The quality of the food is poor. My mother's heat and a/c never functioned properly. Frequently fire alarms going off in the middle of the night. Some staff members are amazing and kind; others are mean and rude. Turnover is very high as noted by the many job signs out front. Covid precaution protocols are not enforced. Information that is given to residents and their families regarding Covid at the facility is inaccurate. For instance, my mom personally requested a Covid test on [date removed] because she was feeling poorly. The result came back positive. She continued to decline. I requested that the facility send an ambulance to take her to the hospital on [date removed]. The weekly newsletter that came out on [date removed] stated that one staff member and one resident had tested positive and that both were asymptomatic and recovering in place. Totally inaccurate. My mother died on [date removed].

St Mary Villa

The food is not that good they need to get a better chef and more variety . It’s the same all the time. They also don’t clean like they should . The Drs and nurses and aids are all very good and very caring!

No longer a good place

This community was sold by the Archdiocese and no one told the residents it was sold. Things have declined since then. The food is terrible. It is like cardboard and they use ketchup for tomato sauce. The staff are wonderful and do everything they can. The residents are really nice. The staff are not happy with these changes. The community use to be a good place and was taken care of. The community is not as clean. They are supposed to clean the apartment once a week and they are not doing this.

Review of ST MARY MANOR STS JOSEPH LUCY ANNE & CAMILLUS WINGS - Lansdale, PA

I had both my parents there at the same time. They both needed short term PT and OT. From a Therapy perspective they did a great job with them. The Therapy unit did a fantastic job. If this review were only based on that experience the ratings would be 5 star. Unfortunately the other service component ratings must be included in the review. My issues with St. Marys are related to cleanliness of the facility and the care that the nurses provide. The living part of the facility is in need of many upgrades. The furniture is outdated and in poor condition. Online pictures do not match actual conditions. The biggest concern is the care provided by some of the nursing staff aides. Most not all have attitudes and do not react well when they are asked for information or help. They also do not respond well to the Nurse call buttons. Patients wait entirely too long for a nurse to come after pushing the button for help. The issues with the nurses may be associated with staffing problems. They seem short staffed which puts more pressure on those that are there. This was my first experience with skilled nursing facilities. I know what to look for now and I would need to see some changes before going back to St. Marys.

Be wary

The staff was friendly and the place seemed well kept, but after being there for twelve days, my mother is now hospitalized with pneumonia. The toilet in her room was not flushing and was not repaired for the last six days of her stay.

Our tour

We took a tour of St. Mary Villa during our search for an Independent Living facility for our loved one. We did not care for this facility. The cleanliness, friendliness and general atmosphere were not great. Not what we were looking for in a facility for our loved one. We decided to move on with our search.

Not a good experience.

I would not recommend this facility to anyone. I have worked in the health care field for a long time and never seen anything like this facility. No assistance for those that had difficulty at meal time.. My sister and I helped open drinks when the residents would ask for help because there was no one around to assist. My mom's room always had towels and wash clothes laying on the floor in her bathroom when I would visit. Ambulation is not encouraged by staff. My mom did not like it she continued to say they are too busy not enough help. When I came to get my mom to take her home her room had dirty towels on the floor nothing packed up started to pack her stuff up then I explained to them when a person is being discharged the staff usually has them packed up. The young lady then offered to help. This is not a healthy environment for your loved one really. My siblings and others that visited my mom all said the same thing I observed. Looking back when they asked me if I would like her to get in home therapy or a facility it would be best to do in home. Would not recommend this facility. Hope this helps someone else.

Worst Place Ever

I don't recommend this place to anyone. My mom had to go here for three weeks. The food was terrible and they give portion sizes for a toddler, such as three fish sticks, a tablespoon of mixed veggies and a tablespoon of macaroni salad. The staff there is very rude and lazy. There was only one nice nurse I saw the whole three weeks my mom was there and her name was [name removed] and we only got the chance to see her twice. They didn't change my mom's bedding no matter how many times we asked, it was like we were asking for too much. My mom's bandage for her leg needed to be changed every other day and of course that didn't get done either, every time we asked a nurse about it, their reply was 'we will check into it' and then it never got done. I asked the night nurse to change my mom's bandage last night and instead of him saying sure no problem, the continues to tell me how he is not there every night and he has no idea when my mom's bandage should be changed. I said well you have notes in her chart that explains what needs to be done but he truly did not care and my mom's bandage did not get changed last night either. The dirty towels and wash clothes were never taken out of my mom's room, I had to do it! I had to bring my mom food, I had to give my mom a shower. The staff did nothing at all. All they did was sit around and talk with each other. Last night instead of taking care of the sick patients that can't vend for themselves, they were talking about which acholic they like, such as fire ball vs rum and coke, not professional at all! I was leaving my mom last night and the patient across from her asked me for help with pulling his legs out so he could be comfortable and turn off his light and shut his door because they nurses were too lazy to help the poor man that couldn't get out of his bed. They give the poor patients tap water that tastes like chlorine. I told a lady that was doing a survey onsite about all this and she said she will look into but of course nothing ever got done. It's sad that I had to keep my mom there but this was the only facility her insurance would cover. I'm so glad my mom's last day in this junk yard is tomorrow! Don't ever take a loved one here because they will not be taking care of.

[name and date removed] Very disappointed in this facility. Or a facility who doesn’t get involved with family matters they sure jumped into this The POA Does not have legal paper work to make all decisions and facility is not allow our mother to make her own decisions when she is quite capabile making her own decisions they stripped her from all out side communication including her call bell when POA took vacation they call police on her daughter when she comes to visit she isn’t even allowed to speak to her attorney mean while this poor lady needs medical help wants a second opinion from her previous doctors so sad how unchristian like this facility is to allow this. The food is awful. The front desk was rude the 2 nurses were caring but not allowed to get involved . They are over medicating when 2 nurses say she needs medical help and nothing is being done for it there charges are way to high for the care they are giving they don’t tell you they are no longer part of the arch diocese of Philadelphia it saddens me my mother is being care for at the end of her life poor food poor care poor staff who doesn’t check paperwork no compassion only after money look pass all the Christian symbols because this facility is just straight not good all away around

DO NOT PUT YOUR PARENTS AT ST. MARY'S

I wish I never placed my parents here. - Food is BAD. HORRIBLE. My parents have no choice but to eat the substandard food options. - I HAVE REQUESTED THE HANDICAP ACCESS BUTTON BE FIXED IN JULY. IT IS NOW NOVEMBER AND IT HAS NOT NBEEN FIXED. - There is simply not enough help. They came into my parents apartment at 5 am to give my mom a shower!!! Really. - The people who work there are great. There is just NO management. I wish I never placed my parents there. It is horrible.

Horrible place to be!

This place was awful and I would not want to send anyone here. There are lacking staff which makes them take less care of the residents. The community is also very nasty and not kept clean. The staff that is there are trying to do a good job, but it is impossible in the conditions that they are in.

The day my mother was admitted to St Martha's,there was an issue of cold air blowing down on her when I was tucking her in bed for the night. I hadnt realized prior to admission/nor been informed that Mom's room & three others were on one thermostat, which was down the hall. The cold air coming from a down vent was reported, but not fixed, so I finally had to pull a kitchen chair down & back, to stand on while I turned the vents up. Granted, my mom's room did also have two wall radiators, but my mother couldn't operate them, let alone remember they were there. Yet,despite repeatedly asking staff to monitor her room temperature,her room was freezing cold or extremely hot on every visit. Then, there was having to deal with a certain caregiver who barked instructions concerning 'floor rules', never gone over @ say, a floor orientation, when a resident moves in? One evening, while I was about to sit Mom with another new resident for dinner, I was shocked by an angry look & finger pointing across the small room to a seat I began to sit my mom with another new resident for dinner, a nasty point of a finger to a seat o pushed up against the wall by the table & a fire hydrant on the wall @ head leve, and a,"She sits there!"barked @ us, so, now I knew rule #1: My mom had an assigned diningroom seat. Another 'rule' I learned in just as an abrupt/rude fashion was, "family members are not allowed in &/or to have a conversation with another family member anywhere near the diningroom. told in an arrogant fashion to leave when I was talking to another family member near the diningroom, They had so many rules and yet had claimed that the residents were to feel 'at home'. There wasn't anything in the refrigerator for Mom to drink between meals. Same old cartons of prune juice, that a dining staff memmber said that they brought to the dementia floor, because no one on the independent living side was drinking them. Oh, and there were quarts of diet sprite. No water, juice, etc. If Mom liked lemonade, I was told to buy it myself. When I questioned residents being adequately hydrated, kitchen staff said that floor caregivers had order sheets to order anything needed to stock their refrigerators, but when I questioned the caregivers, they denied this. Stated that they could only order meals and argued that, besides, "their residents are adequately hydrated, between meal beverages, water with medications & an occasional snack during an activity. (Upon removing Mom from St Martha's, labwork showed her to be, in fact, dehydrated, and she required Potassium supplements) Another stressor, was never getting an answer when I called with a question to her floor. Then, their advertised "beautiful courtyard" still had not been cleaned up for the season by mid-July when I removed Mom. The only birdbath, had a broken, crumbling top top. There was a garden workstation, but the sink was filled with the muddy water with leaves from winter. Birdfeeders, as well as past-season flower pots, sat empty or contained dead plants, including the ones surrounding a Mother Mary statue. My mother's hair didn't get washed for five weeks, even though I had signed her up for weekly beauty shop appointments. The list goes on & on, but the most upsetting incident was when staff called to tell me my mom was acting out, but refused to let me speak to her, to calm her down, stating "dementia residents are not allowed on their phones". Staff, from head administrator to caregivers, not only did not respond to my requests on behalf of my mother, but were defensive & argumentative with me. A 'very'disturbing experience indeed'is how I would describe St. Martha's Villa. It's been four months since we left St Martha's, but I'm still experiencing problems, due to the haphazard way in which they ordered medications. My mother's insurance company is trying to charge us the cash price, $59.69, for two tablets, because St Martha's didn't get the required prior authorization first. I have called the financial manager twice to post date the prior auth, which should resolve the issue. She says that head administrator needs to do it & states that she has sent an email to her both times, but it appears that she's refusing to comply. I also just called the financial director's suppervisor, as well as the facility's director last week, but no respose. I have paid Mom's portion of the bill, but the pharmacy states it has been since June, so it is going to collection & my credit as co-signer on the account will be affected for their negligence.
