Costs of nursing homes in the Baton Rouge area

In Baton Rouge, a private room in a skilled nursing home — this includes 24-hour short- and long-term care — will cost $5,931 on average.[01] This price is much lower than the national average; however, it may not be inclusive of all costs.

Assisted living and memory care facilities are a more cost-effective option for seniors who don’t require around-the-clock care. For facilities that offer assisted living and memory care, the average monthly cost in this area is $4,306[02]. This cost is an average of actual costs, collected in A Place For Mom’s proprietary data. It includes room and board, associated services and fees, onsite amenities, and care.

VA benefits for nursing homes in Baton Rouge

For veterans in Baton Rouge, there are many financial and practical support options available. Find your local VA community to access the benefits assistance programs in your area, get help understanding VA benefits that apply to assisted living and memory care, and connect with your local veterans service officers for guidance.

Veterans in Louisiana have a range of benefits available that may help defray the cost of long-term care. The most applicable is the Aid and Attendance benefit, which can cover in-residence care for veterans who have been injured or disabled due to active service. You may also be able to access additional benefits, even if you have a disability or long-term condition not directly caused by combat.

In Baton Rouge, your local veterans service officers (VSOs) will help you navigate a complex benefits system. VSOs are located at veteran hubs and organizations, including the Louisiana Department of Veterans Affairs, the American Legion, and many others.

Baton Rouge Medicaid for nursing homes

Louisiana Medicaid is the Medicaid program covering Baton Rouge. It is intended for low-income seniors and those with specific conditions. Depending on the care type you choose and your income level from other sources, Medicaid could cover some or all of your health care costs. It is important to note that Medicaid does not cover rent costs specifically, so those staying in assisted living facilities may only use benefits for the care portion of their fees. To apply or get more information, head to the Louisiana Medicaid Self-Service Portal (SSP).

For seniors who need long-term nursing care within their home environment, Long Term Care Medicaid may be the most applicable option. It comes under the Home and Community-Based Services (HCBS) waiver program and covers the costs of nursing facility-based services, including 24-hour care.

Other resources to help you apply and understand Medicaid are plentiful in Baton Rouge. Visit the Capital Area Agency on Aging for help accessing the right long-term care plan for you. The local ombudsman in Baton Rouge is Peggy Essick, and her office can connect you with helpful resources that are most relevant to your situation.

Medicare nursing home coverage in Baton Rouge

Medicare in Louisiana does not cover custodial costs associated with nursing home-based care, but no matter what kind of facility you’re living in, you can claim coverage for certain medical costs. This includes skilled nursing where medically necessary, costs associated with hospital stays and physician visits, pharmaceutical costs, as well as offsite stays, such as during surgery or treatment.

For help understanding your rights to Medicare and for assistance, your local Senior Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP) program has available counselors. For additional help with application forms, your local Social Security Assistance Office is also nearby. That’s where you’ll apply in person if you don’t apply online. Last but not least, your local ombudsman is Peggy Essick, located at the Capital Area Agency on Aging, and can support seniors and their families as they navigate the above resources.

If you’re looking for additional help, the Louisiana Medicare Savings Program can provide benefits to eligible seniors who are already enrolled in Medicare Part A. This can help lower income seniors cover premiums. The SenioRx program is available for lower income people to help with certain drug costs. It’s administered through the Agency on Aging. You can use this application to apply for prescription  assistance.

Understand Baton Rouge laws and regulations for nursing homes

Nursing home facilities in Louisiana must be licensed by the Louisiana Department of Health via inspections by the Office of State Fire Marshall and by the Office of Public Health as well as disclosure of owners with 5% or greater ownership. A nursing home is defined as a private home or institution in which multiple residents receive necessary personal care and nursing.

Some memory care facilities in our listings will also come under the “nursing facilities” umbrella and be inspected as such, but facilities may have additional guidelines for the provision of memory care, more specifically. For example, a nursing facility with an Alzheimer’s Special Care Unit must have designated, secure areas and pathways to protect memory care patients.

Full standards for licensed nursing facilities can be found here. They include rules for regular inspections, for informing and communicating with residents, for the delivery of care and 24-hour security, and much more.

Regulations for Assisted Living and Memory Care Facilities

Memory care facilities are grouped as a specialized form of assisted living. Assisted living facilities also require a license from the Health Standards Section (HHS) of the Louisiana Department of Health. Once licensed, these communities are categorized as adult residential care providers. Because of this category, these facilities must then undergo inspections regularly. During these inspections, which occur once a year, the facility must prove that they have established the necessary systems, equipment, and protocols to provide adequate care to seniors, including standard health, safety, and cleanliness.

Additionally, facilities have to prove they can address the evolving requirements and preferences of residents by having developed care plans accordingly. For instance, they are required to offer 24-hour supervision and provide services and layouts that protect the dignity and privacy of their residents. They must also provide transportation for medical and personal appointments to residents who are unable to arrange their own means of transportation.

You can refer to the Department of Health website for even more detailed information. If you’d like to obtain inspection reports, you need to submit a public records request. The instructions on how to do so can be found here.

What to expect from nursing homes in Baton Rouge

In A Place For Mom’s partner facilities, you will find homes and communities where seniors can receive care, whether that’s for a specific condition like Alzheimer’s or more general everyday care. Some come under the category of assisted living, others can be classed as memory care, and others are communities with dedicated, skilled nursing wings or departments. These are all frequently grouped under the term nursing home.

Let’s take a closer look at the different types of care communities available:

  • Memory care facilities: These facilities primarily serve individuals with memory-related conditions such as Alzheimer’s and dementia.
  • Assisted living facilities: These facilities cater to seniors who require some assistance, but do not need 24-hour nursing care. Some seniors who move into assisted living facilities anticipate potentially needing skilled nursing care in the future.
  • Independent living facilities: Seniors who are self-sufficient and only need occasional assistance may prefer to live in independent living facilities instead of living in a standalone apartment or home. These facilities are part of a larger community.

In assisted living facilities, seniors can anticipate receiving exceptional care and assistance. They can rely on services such as 24-hour security, on-call care, specialized nursing care, and visits from physicians. This ensures that residents feel secure, knowing that their community can provide them with the necessary support to handle any possible challenges they may face. Some facilities have different areas that they specialize in. For example, from our list of memory care and assisted living partners, 88% of them specialize in memory care.

A facility to match your care needs

Assisted living and memory care facilities in our listings offer a high level and quality of care. Of our nine listings, five are a combination of assisted living and memory care, three are a combination of assisted living and independent living, and one is standalone memory care. If you wish to go outside the market radius, within 20 miles, there are two additional facilities classified as assisted living/memory care/independent living.

The facilities that offer a combination of care give you the opportunity to customize the care experience for your loved one. A senior may need 24-hour supervision or simply regular nurse visits. They may require an onsite physician, which is available at some facilities, or their needs may be satisfied by having a great local clinic where they can go for primary care. No matter their individual needs, there will be a facility within our network that can help.

Extra amenities and community benefits

In Baton Rouge, care is the foundation of an assisted living or memory care experience, but there is a lot more for seniors and their families to discover. Extra services and amenities can make life a little sweeter. Time spent outdoors is crucial for well-being, and all of our in-network facilities house outdoor seating and walking areas. Amenities allow residents to connect with their passions and hobbies. BBQs, picnics, gardening clubs, accessible yoga – whatever your loved one is into, you can find it in these senior care facilities.
