Oklahoma City is considered moderately unfriendly to members of the LGBTQ+ community. This means that members of the community may face discrimination by members of the general public in certain areas.
With its vibrant cowboy culture and Midwest charm, Oklahoma City feels like it should be in the heart of the Old West. Living in Oklahoma City is great for those who are interested in history because of the large number of museums located within the city. The National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum houses more than 28,000 Western and American Indian artifacts. The museum also has the world largest collection of rodeo memorabilia. The American Banjo Museum houses the nation’s largest collection of banjos and banjo-related items. The American Pigeon Museum and Library is dedicated to the history and care of domestic pigeons. The Oklahoma Railway Museum operates four diesel locomotives and has a full assortment of railcars. They operate train rides every first and third Saturday of each month, April through August, and put on a number of special events.
A must-see location in the city is the Oklahoma City National Memorial which honors the victims, survivors, rescuers, and all who were affected by the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing. The memorial is located on the site of the original building where the explosion took place, a somber reminder of our nation’s troubled past.
You can find fun for the whole family at the Oklahoma City Zoo which is home to 1,900 animals as well as a botanical garden. The Oklahoma City Museum of Art is home to a number of revolving exhibits and also features a permanent collection of Chihuly glass sculptures. For a fun Friday night on the town, check out Automobile Alley, which features vintage neon signs and a diverse array of dining options. Another popular spot is Bricktown, which includes the Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark, the navigable Bricktown Canal, and the 16-screen Harkins movie theatre. Oklahoma City also has two senior centers which organize social events for seniors 55 years of age and older. The Will Rogers Senior Center offers a community garden that seniors can help tend in their spare time. The OKC Aquatic Center also offers a number of swim and exercise classes for seniors.
