My father was a 104 years old when he was a resident at the Carnelian. He had progressing dementia, was very needy and presented with a a variety of special needs - in other words, he could be challenging and sometimes difficult. The Carnelian staff was absolutely wonderful in working and caring for him. They are very attentive, compassionate, incredibly patient, knowledgeable and personal with the residents. I observed this culture constantly when visiting (2-3x/week). There are primary caregivers assigned to the resident which keeps relationships close, familiar and caring. The house grounds are beautiful, warm, lush with gardens and conducive to being outside on the large decks and nearby grounds. The array of activities are excellent (games, movies on a big screen, live music, etc.) and encouraged. The facility hosts amazing parties on the primary holidays like July 4, Thanksgiving and Christmas. And the food is excellent, period! Lastly, I can't say enough about the staff (I've tried) including the manager, [Removed]. She is the chief saint at the Carnelian - full of energy, available, hands-on, smart, knowledgeable, communicative and compassionate - truly a special person. Simply put, this is the place for your aging loved one.

The Carnelian is a charming complex of homes and gardens. The decor is quite ornate and would not have suited my husband who likes military-like neatness and simplicity. I did like the philosophy of the manager/owner in regard to dealing with residents. It seems that they are treated like family members.

Amazing place.....finally!
It has taken me 3 years to find the right place for my mom, now 89 and with moderate dementia. The Carnelian provides her a place that is like being at home for her. It is large enough so there are a variety of other people to get to know and small enough so she can get the care she needs. Caregivers are always the same and treat her like she was their own. Don't waste your time trying to place a loved one, with dementia, in a large assisted living place. They need stimulation and warm loving care, they really don't need their own apartment!
