A nice community with some room for improvement.

Many things were missing from my husband's room and we were unable to retrieve all of them. The person across the hall had a lot of things in her room. At least we were able to retrieve those! For the memory care unit. The unit just seemed depressing, hard to judge how clean. Staff very friendly, helpful. I was away, and had to text director to get staff to take him outside. His visitors reported that he was either sitting by himself or pacing the halls. I found him walking upset in halls when I picked him up. I don't know about meal because my husband is unable to remember anything about them. Did not get any feedback on activities. Did get one text with a picture of him on the putting green outside. He did not want to be there, kept trying to leave, so I don't think he was off the locked unit much. If he could have stayed in assisted living, I would have thought the value for money was a 5. Although the staff in memory care was very good, I'm not sure there were enough to give the care I wanted for him.... Read more

I highly recommend this facility for loved ones.

What we like the most about The Avalon of Auburn Hills community is the friendly staff and the great care. However, is it kind of pricy though. Based on the experience we have had, we would recommend them to other families.

Facility feedback

I have recommended people consider The Avalon of Auburn Hills. The facility is nice, clean, and modern. The food was fair, it may be better for those that can go to the main dining room. My mom ate on her floor, in Memory Care dining, that had food brought up. The staff is mostly good. We visited often so, communication with the family was frequent. I would recommend soft flooring in the bathroom for patients who have a tendency to fall.

Would Recommend

I think The Avalon of Auburn Hills is a very clean and modern facility, which I really appreciate. Our whole family has been impressed with the facility, yet It's still a very warm and family-like atmosphere. Overall I think the care of our family member is good. We've had to talk with them a few times about her diet. Sometimes that communication wasn't getting to their dietary department. Coordination of that took some time, but we finally did get it resolved.

Our families experience

From a facility standpoint we do think it is very nice, relatively new, clean and modern. The size of the rooms are probably amongst the best we had seen. You could pick between a one bedroom or a two bedroom that had a separate living area. The staff are certainly friendly and try very hard which is a big positive - we do think when it comes to memory care they could use a little more training. The meal arrangement's are nice, the dining area is nice and they all eat together. It is a single price, nothing that is nickel and dime it is all inclusive. We would recommend them to other families

Pandemic compounded care issues.

Let me preface my remarks by saying that the pandemic made operating of any of these assisted living places difficult. There was instances of long wait times & mom hesitated to press her button for any small thing: she starting doing most everything herself, including the bathroom, which is a liability issue. Mom was at a 3rd level of care, but rate should have been adjusted as she became more self sufficient; a reappraisal was not done. Expired food was found on shelves & in her mini fridge. Laundry was not sorted (whites got dingy from mixed loads), food in dining room was not geared towards senior's diets (onions, cruciferous vegs like broccoli that are hard to digest). They did help with a GF diet. Mom moved out with another person's meds; Mom had side effects from taking wrong meds for 10 days. Medtechs are basically kids dispensing meds. Upon moving out, it was found that 227. in items were missing, though things were marked. We are owed pro rata rent of 2.7+K 10 wks later.

General Overview

They haven't disappointed me yet. As long as you're involved and ask a lot of questions, you should be fine. The staff are pretty good. Sometimes in the afternoon/early evening I don't see a lot of staff around. The food is fine. They have a lot do as far as activities, and they try all the time to get my loved one involved.

Our families experience

We do know it was during covid and it was before the employment situation with any care givers got to critical shortages. There were some decent employees, 3 out of the 4 receptionist were very helpful, but once was cold and not helpful. Some of the care staff were top notch people, but the director of nursing was not. We could visit them inside a complete glass box only, we did not have access to our loved ones apartment. House keeping did not change our loved ones beds for 2 months. Not confident in their care at all.

What You See Isn't What You Get

They have a set meal plan, and they don't give an additional choice if the resident doesn't like what is served. The community has a lot of turnover of staff. The activities director is awesome, and tries to get my loved one involved in activities. The front desk attendants are wonderful. If the current Executive Director was there a year ago, I wouldn't have put my loved one in this community. I am currently looking for a new community for my loved one.

Window Dressing Not Much Substance

I wasn't impressed with the community. They ignored my loved one and brought the meals to them due to the pandemic. They only tried half-hearted to engage my loved on with activities. The food looked like Gordon foods. It didn't seem that the community put little effort into the meals during the pandemic. The dining room food was better, prior to COVID. I was able to do window visits, this was the highlight of the stay here.

Beautiful Community, But Lacked Follow Through In Leadership

Most of the staff are very caring; however, they don't keep track of a lot of their employees. The care for the residents than lacks due to this. The communication wasn't good within the community when I had to call for my loved one.

Definitely consider this community

The staff members at First & Main are very friendly, and are very social. They had some issues with staffing during COVID, but when they are staffed they are very good. It is a fairly good value, and the reason we picked this community is we believed they had the residents care on top priority. They seemed to be really concerned about everyone's well being. The rooms are very nice, our loved one is in a one room suite, it is perfect for her and she is comfortable. From our understanding the seems to be enjoyed the food.

Very high turnover, poor care, lack of respect to family members. Lack of accountable when concerns or issues arise. Many caretekers have "attitude" problems and really run the place. Residents do not like it but afraid to tell the Management. I would not recommend at all even with the New Management.

Frustrating

Do not be fooled by the "atmosphere" and looks of this Assistant Living. Many 'attitudes' by the staff, lack of good care, chronic issues do not get resolved ie., like feces left on toilet seat and no one takes responsibility of cleaning, it up., caretakers "not my job" .. so in the meantime your loved one cannot go to bathroom...gross yes but that has been our experience. Any complaint is not taken seriously and becomes a "he said- she said" scenario. Many residents are not happy but afraid to tell the management. The new management does communicate changes and all of sudden you are charged on your invoice. It lacks team work among caretakers and the rest of the staff. At times, some staff , caretakers very rude and to the family member. Once you complain you are "labeled" by the caretaking staff and your love one will be treated unfairly. Please do not have the owners response to this review to contact the executive director, [name removed] for help since that doesnt resolve anything. Will never forget the first time meeting with new director, explaining not happy, wanting to take my mom away. His comments back "would you like a referral" . #frustrated caretaker of mom

Hello, Thank you for sharing your thoughts and experience about First & Main of Auburn Hills. This community transitioned to a new owner who put in place Grace Management, Inc. as the manager in July of 2021. Our amazing team of associates are dedicated to the lifetime satisfaction and utmost care of every resident, providing individualized services and amenities to each person who calls our community home. Mom fell last night, no call from the staff when they found her on the floor. I received a call at 6 am morning she fell last night. This is NOT NORMAL for an assistant living failure to contact family. They do not know what happen and how it happen- but I am with my mother at the hospital now. Short staff leads to long waits to care for anyone.

A Place for Mom has scored The Avalon of Auburn Hills 8.2 out of 10 using our proprietary review score.

We assign review scores to give a more reliable view into senior living communities and home care agencies. Our review scores prioritize reviews that are recent — the past 24 months — because we know families need current information when choosing senior care.

Those with many recent, positive reviews receive a high review score, while providers with few recent reviews — regardless of how positive — receive a lower review score. Communities with no recent reviews will not have a review score, even if older reviews are positive. The maximum A Place for Mom review score a community can receive is 10 points.
