The Best Option for Us

From what I understand, it's probably one of the better options in the area. It certainly has been a good option for us. Things I appreciate about Sunrise at Orchard: It's in close proximity to where I live, and being right on the edge of Greenwood Village, it's in a pretty upscale neighborhood, which is nice. It's also right across the parking lot from the library. In general, the staff is unfailingly kind. They accommodate my loved one's mental health issues. There are a few members of senior staff who are excellent. My loved one's suite is especially attractive. It's in a rotunda portion of the building, so it's like a turret with 180 degree views, and it gets light pretty much all day. Their pet friendly policy is truly genuine, and that's very important to my loved one. The landscaping and architecture are designed to make it very homey. Compared to other facilities, they really strive to make it something that the residents would like. Other facilities are decorated to appeal to a younger demographic, but Sunrise focuses more on resident preferences than on younger family members. For instance, the décor colors are warmer than some of the cooler blue colors that are common in other facilities. Things I think they could improve upon: The meals are set by the corporate offices, and they're not necessarily taking into account what the residents would like. The prepared foods are pretty tasteless, but they do have some fresh fruits and vegetables, so it's possible to eat healthfully if the resident chooses to. It's designed for people who are less mentally aware than my loved one, so she has trouble connecting with other residents who are less mentally sharp. She tends to feel isolated there because there aren't really other residents on the same intellectual level, so we find it necessary to make sure she gets her socialization outside of the facility. We were told there would be a lot of activities, and there are. But there's very little for her to do because what they're offering is not as stimulating. And at this time they're not able to provide field trips like they were promising. I would say that billing and administration can be difficult. There's a lack of clarity regarding charges, and it can be really hard to get information on how the billing works. Months after move-in, we are still having problems understanding our bill. The everyday lower level staff will get away with whatever they are able to. They're very kind, but they tend to be lazy if they can get away with it. It would be difficult to monitor if your parent isn't mentally alert. My thought is they're on par with other facilities in that regard. And that leads me to one general caveat - I don't recommend anybody who cares about their loved one to put them in a facility and trust that they're going to have a good experience without the family staying involved. And that would apply to any place. But on the good side, they've been very conscientious about Covid precautions. And one of the main factors in our decision to come to Sunrise was there was a very reasonable 3-figure buy-in, whereas at other facilities it can be up to 6 figures. Also, the commitment is month-to-month instead of being locked in with a contract. Overall, it has been a good decision for our family.... Read more

terrible experience

No one should be treated like they treated our mom. Left her heart pills sitting around in her room and never seemed to have her oxygen charged or on the correct level. These are life threatening issues. When we met with the staff about these issues they said we were expecting perfection. These are skills that should be administered with the up importance with no room for error. IN her care plan showers were scheduled for 2 days a week which were very infrequent. The most uncaring staff with absolutely no response to our issues. As soon as we gave notice the care got worse, which I didn't think was possible. VERY SAD.

Unresponsive staff, great support before move in but abandoned after

When we met with the staff during the initial appointment, they were attentive, responsive, and offered to help us find our footing as we moved forward (we didn't have any experience with early onset Alzheimer's). After move-in however, we didn't get the support for working with finances, long-term care, or setting up meetings/visits with my parent. Be extremely careful they don't sell you on something that they cannot/will not support.

Staff Needs More Training

The staff are not as well trained in handling Alzheimer's/dementia patients, especially the night shift that you don't normally see unless you stay overnight. The nurses are not really trained to give medication properly. We experienced a nurse giving medication and not removing the lid from the syringe, which could have popped down our loved one's throat. They were not properly placing liquid medication in her mouth. It would either drip out or cause her to cough excessively. They were also not properly trained to determine when a person is still alive or has passed. In our situation, they came out of the room and told my sister who had stayed the night that our loved one had passed away. But it was just a long extended breath hold, and she was still alive. My advice to other families - If you can get services from hospice, I would highly recommend it in addition to the nursing home care.

Would recommend this community

Our loved one seems to enjoy the meals and dining service, and the rooms would be about a four out of five. We would recommend this community to others.

Stay away

If your parents require more observation other than sitting in a chair watching TV this is not the place to put your parents. The food they serve is like cafeteria food, nothing special, and the rooms are about average.

Overall, very happy

The dining room is always very clean and very nice. The staff is very friendly, they engaged both my kids and my grandmother which made our visit a very pleasant experience. It seems my grandmother enjoys the staff and feels they do really care about her. overall, we are happy with the care my grandmother is receiving. She always feels entertained and happy with the activities provided for her and the other residents and she can always find something to do and is never bored, which we feel is very important. During the Covid-19 pandemic, they could have been a lot better about communicating with the family and with my grandmother, who did not always know what was going on. We felt that because of this, it wasn't a very safe environment and we worried about whether or not we should be taking her out. Other than that, we would definitely recommend Sunrise to other families! Prior to the pandemic, we have never seen my grandmother happier. She enjoyed the community, staff, and other residents and loved living there.

A great place for mom

Sunrise seems to be a very open and welcoming community. She moved in a week prior to the quarantine and she was very happy that week. Now she would like to just be able to get out and go the dinner! She looked at three different communities, but she chose Sunrise because it was closet to her family.

Disappointed

After being told this would be an end of life guarantee, this resident was told he could not return to sunrise because of some dementia related behaviors Worse than that, he was given one day after leaving rehab to find another place Do believe the sales office pitch

Unreliable

Don't be fooled by the sales people at sunrise They admitted my brother, saying he would have care until the end of life Then he had a stroke and some dementia behaviors and wouldn't take him back Now I having all his furniture with no place to put it and I have to search for a new place quickly because they gave me one day'a notice to move out

The Care Plan is not being followed. When we ask about it they start saying our father has patient rights and can refuse. He has become very sick since being their. We do not recommend this facility.

This is a beautiful property, and the staff seems very engaged. The home smelled fresh and nice, and was light and well maintained. Rated a 4 only because it does not accept Medicaid, which is necessary for Mom.

Homey warm atmosphere

The staff members here are good and they have been very responsive to our questions and concerns. They are working hard in getting my Mother-In-Law a set up routine to help her get acclimated. It is a well-kept facility and it has a good homey atmosphere. When I’ve been here around meal time the food smells good and the staff says they pride themselves on having good food. I would recommend this community to other families.

I really liked how the facility truly looked like a little town - each unit even had it's own front window. I was especially impressed with The Club - I could see my Dad doing really well in a structure activity-based environment with a set schedule. We will definitely keep this option in mind.

Love this Place

My dad is here in this community and it is a clean and homey feeling. The caregivers are responsive and caring. The food is good although they have to feed him sometimes. Lots of activities if he wanted to attend them. The outside is nice too.
