Safe, caring, and clean
My mom has been at Canterbury House for two years and enjoys it very much. As with any congregate living situation, family type "issues" arise. But the home is safe, clean, and caring. The staff welcomes family members to dinner anytime. I recommend this place for your loved ones.

Peace of Mind
Before going to Canterbury House, our mom was in an overpriced Senior Living facility where there was a constant turnover in management, many of her needs were not met and her safety was in question (ie: her egress wasn't shoveled or cleared, mold in closet, etc) Since finding Canterbury House (thanks to a recommendation from "A Place for Mom"), our mother couldn't be happier. She has a very comfortable mall studio apartment and is still able to live independently. IT is a small community, so residents know one another on a friendly basis. Our family knows the staff by name and they are very helpful and attentive to our mom. [Name removed], the manager, couldn't be more amicable or professional! He greets all with a positive attitude, warm smile and is very helpful to all. Residents are served three meals a day. The portions are a good size for the elderly. Our mom is a very poor eater--a bit fussy, too--yet she has never gone without a meal. The staff is willing to make her a sandwich or some other simple meal is she is not in favor of the main meal. Mom is legally blind and hearing impaired, so there isn't much she can do to enjoy herself. Yet, when it's time for bingo, the cards are HUGE and she is able to play one of her favorite games. Even if only one or two other residents come for Bingo, the staff willingly sets up and calls the numbers for the group! Throughout the year, local artists/ musicians come to entertain the residents, which is something our mom truly looks forward to! Even at 93, she is always excited to get up on the floor to dance--with or without a partner! Considering the exorbitant costs of most senior living communities, Canterbury is very affordable and well worth it! It has not only provided our mother with a safe, comfortable and quality of life--it has give her family peace of mind!

ok
According to what I hear from my mother who is living there at Canterbury House, they are not very generous with the food. That is certainly the biggest area that they have for improvement. Other than that it is ok. Very nice facility and staff.

The "onsite beautification" are some dull shrubs near the all black front door There is only one ramp for handicap access...around the side of the building where you have to cross a lawn with a slight incline and no other way up besides stairs. The "activities" are few and far between and when there are it's an hour of bingo MAYBE once or twice a month. The "devotional services" happen once a month. If that. The residents pay for/schedule their own visiting nurses and whatnot. Not the facility. The rent is upwards of 1,000 a month and all they really get are meals and basic electric/heat/water included. They have to pay for their own phone, internet, and/or tv. The residents are not allowed to offer input on new projects and if they try to offer input on how they want their living facility to be they are ignored. There is a washer and dryer hookup available but residents are chastised if their load isn't big enough because otherwise they're wasting water and money on running the machines. If they don't like what the main meal choice is (because they get no say in that either) the only alternatives offered are eggs or cereal with a side of toast. The rooms are cleaned by an employee...once a week. If a resident doesn't really feel like eating they don't get much say in it and will be told to come to eat anyway. The administrator seems phony like he only smiles and acts friendly to sell another 1,000+ dollar room.
