I would recommend

We chose Brookdale West Melbourne because we knew people who had been there post surgery for rehab and had a good experience. The room sizes at the facility are a little on the smaller side but they were comparable to others we looked into. The social director [name removed] is excellent at drawing people out and getting them to join in on things. I would recommend them to others looking.

PLEASE DO NOT BRING HERE ! Read first

HORRIBLE !!! DON"T BRING ANYONE YOU LOVE HERE. PLEASE READ FIRST !!! They quote you one price & bill you another. They have your blank check for auto withdraw so your kinda forced to pay whatever amt. they decide to take out. My dad was there for 20 days. Gave a written notice I was pulling him out & Brookdale of West Melbourne & they charged & took over $9600- for my dad being there 31 days. They forgot to order his meds & ran out. They say housekeeping but they only vacuum. They give out sleep meds at 7 pm & they have to see them swallow it. i asked 5 times NOT to give till 9 pm, didn't happen. After two weeks they changed his meds he'd been on for years seeing specialist. They NEVER once called me to discuss. They will return calls BEFORE your parent moves in. Once they're in & contract is signed... good luck getting a return call. They are told where to sit in the dining as if they are children. They claim entertainment but its really only Bingo & one resident who cant communicate at all plays the piano every night. That' the entertainment ! MY dad was a high functioning but has Alzheimer's. UNLESS YOUR PARENT IS COMATOSE & LOADED DON'T BRING THEM HERE ! My dad could still talk to people BUT there was no one for him to talk to because They're residents should be in Memory Care NOT Assisted Living. They make more money if your parent is in AL than Memory Care so, they keep them there

Glad it’s all on one level. Even more happy that I don’t have direct draft, since on more than one occasion they screwed up the billing. The staff have been very good for the most part. Not thrilled with her diet, since my mother is diabetic and her diet was way too high carb.

Looking elsewhere

Not our best experience. My father was here for seasonal care while my parents were in Florida. It is near their condo and we were able to arrange transportation to their community center a couple times a week. However, the activities at Brookdale where no where near advertise and administratively they were a nightmare. It took several months and repeated calls to get the paperwork sent to our insurer for reimbursement and a couple months with repeated calls to get the deposit returned when there were no outstanding issues.

[Name removed] is terrible!

If you love your parent, AVOID BROOKDALE W MELBOURNE AT ALL COSTS!!! Other than occasional musicians, “Activities” is a joke ever since [name removed] left in 2016. Staff are overworked and bitter. The cooks double as caregivers because they’re always short staffed. The Exec Director is downright mean, and staff are afraid of her. Call buttons are pointless because it takes so long for them to respond. Residents are not happy with food, activities, response times, overall cleanliness. Very depressing environment.

1. We never received the Exhibit Z(service pricing) when we toured. We were very forthcoming my grandmother is on a fixed income so anything much more than $3500 would not be feasible for her. One week in the addition of 2 services makes it impossible for her to stay there. 2. My grandmother arrived Wednesday the 4th and was not bathed for a week despite paying for the service and her room was not cleaned despite that being included. 3. After explaining my gmaws introverted personality, we were assured, a welcoming committee would greet her, show her the facilities and invite her to meals and activities. That never happened. The first day she was there, she had to go to 3 tables to find a place to sit. Then not knowing where the closest restrooms were, she had an accident on the way back to her room despite asking for help in the hall. It was my mom who cleaned her up and asked for a welcome packed and a list of activities. She also missed dinner her second day because she was unsure of timing and where to go and she likely would have missed lunch today had I not called and asked them to take her. 4. My gmaw was released from rehab with a catheter. This is new for her and us as well. Up until the stroke she lived independently and had complete control of her bowels. The nurse Amanda was rude when showing my mom and grandmother how to empty the bag and made it very clear, that was not in her job description. 5. My gmaw fell out of bed her 4th night there. BD claims the night staff checks on the residents every 2-4 hours but there is no log to verify when their last check occurred. She rang her call bell but it was never answered. She also said she managed to knock on her neighbors wall but that too, went unanswered. She was not found until 7:30 AM and my aunt not made ware until 9:30 AM. My gmaw has been there less than a week and the treatment she has received has been sub par at best and is bordering on neglect. I would not recommend this place to anyone.

So Far Very Pleased

My husband hasn't been here for very long a little over a month or so but overall it has been a positive experience. He seems to have settled in nicely and is starting to make friends and socialize. The staff is friendly and very nice. The housekeeping staff does a wonderful job of keeping the facility clean and well maintained. I am assuming that he likes the food there I have not had any complaints so far. Overall we are pleased with what we have experienced so far and hope it continues.

Brookdale

My mom is now in the memory care unit since there were not enough nurses to care for her in assisted living. The staff is very friendly and helpful but if your parent is not completely self sufficient (does not need coaxing for meds, showering, escort to meals or activities) you will be charged for every single thing they do, bit by bit by bit. Memory care is more expensive but all inclusive. We were too rushed in this important decision and got ourselves feeling cornered to make a quick move. I really think my mom will be happy and well taken care of but I would want to do more research.

Money grabbing Facility

Brookdale Alzheimers Facility is a nightmare. My husband was drugged so badly he could not walk without help and consequently fell several times and was badly bruised. His legs swelled and sores appeared and were not treated. The floor of his bathroom was extremely dirty, smelled horrible, the toilet was plugged and no one knew what to do. He was there 20 days and was treated like garbage. The food was terrible, the "Locked facility" was a joke and he got out 5 times. I was then given the ultimatum to remove him or hire around the clock care. That bill was over $3000 for a week. I paid over $3000 when he went in and a few days after he left, received another bill for over $7000. It is a money grabbling company with minimum help but lots of administrative executives floating around.

Overall a good experience, some issues to work on

Overall I think they do a good job at Brookdale West Melbourne. It's a nice looking facility, the rooms are a good size for the price, and they've got a lot to offer the residents in terms of activities and amenities. They do a particularly good job with the food, the spread is always impressive! The staff is friendly and professional, they're always ready to help with any questions or concerns you might have. All that being said, I do think they could improve their cleaning service. My loved one's bathroom doesn't get as much attention as we'd like, and I would also like to see them be a bit more thorough when it comes to her personal cleanliness as well.

Activities Could Use Improvement

They can improve on the activities. My experience overall would be that the workers are very nice and helpful and informative. It seems to me that they are understaffed, which is why they can't do as many activities. Other than that, I would say that they are okay.

They are doing very well.

They are doing very well. It's very clean there. The staff is very friendly and very helpful. There could be more activities, they are trying to change things and add things on. I love that place, and some places are too social, but a little more social would be good. The food is very bland, other than that they like the variety and the quality of the food. A little gravy or sauce on the rice would be good, it just needs a little oomph. There really isn't anything that needs to be improved or done better, other than that.

Provided good service, if a bit expensive

This is the only senior community I've had any experience with, but overall I thought they did a good job in terms of the care they provided my loved one. The facility itself was well kept and clean, and for the most part the staff were friendly. They did seem a bit understaffed, but they worked very hard. The biggest issue we had was the way they handled their pricing. They tacked on quite a few additional fees for extra services my loved one needed, but as understaffed as they were I'm not sure they were able to perform these extra duties to a degree that would justify the cost. I did not like that the first time they mentioned the $2,000 "community fee" was when we were sitting down to sign the move-in paperwork.
