About the community

Avamere at Chestnut Lane is the only facility in the United States that offers Assisted Living services for Deaf and DeafBlind residents. Our building overlooks downtown Gresham, and the views of Mt. Hood from our dining room are spectacular. We are located just 20 minutes East of Portland and it is easily accessible by light rail. Residents and their families are just a quick train ride from Portland's boutique shops, eclectic dining scene, Oregon Zoo, world-famous rose gardens, and the Portland Saturday Market.

Our Deaf and DeafBlind Community was specifically designed with wide open areas so that residents can sign to each other from across the room. Rooms include kitchenettes, private bathrooms, walk-in closets, and windows. Residents also have the option to have their own videophone (VP) in their apartment, or they may use the community videophone. Ninety-percent of our Staff is Deaf themselves and are fluent in American Sign Language (ASL). We have Staff ASL Interpreters if residents need to communicate with our hearing Staff.

We are an active Deaf and DeafBlind community, and our small-size community allows us to tailor our programs to everyone's needs and preferences; current resident and staff favorites include:

Needs More Cleaning!!

I really hope that it could be possible that they made a specific area for smoking. At any entrance family and loved ones always have to pass by so much smoke and it's making my loved one sick. At the beginning of my loved ones stay no one greeted us or even gave us a welcome packet that explained rules, meal times, and other information we would have like to have received. The carpets are stained and need a good cleaning and in some floors like the 3rd floor by the elevator it always smell like urine. The staff is friendly and the meals are good that is the positive side to the community.
