The holidays give family members of all generations an opportunity to see how one another are doing and whether anyone may need help or encouragement during this time.

If you are visiting a parent or senior loved one over the holidays, you can also use your visit as an opportunity to assess their well-being. Learn more about how to carry out an assessment using our senior safety and well-being checklist.

How to Ensure Your Parents Are Safe by Using the Senior Safety and Well-Being Checklist

If it has been a while since you’ve visited with senior parents and loved ones, the holidays can be the perfect time to check-in and assess their well-being, in addition to enjoying quality time with the family.

To help inform your conversation with your parents, A Place for Mom has created a handy, printable checklist which you can download by using the link below.

Though you don’t want to necessarily spend the New Year talking about home safety and medications, you can reserve some time during the beginning or end of your visit to go over these items without detracting from the joyfulness of the holidays.

Senior safety topics that you’ll want to consider discussing include:

  • Bathroom safety
  • Communication and cognitive function
  • Food, nutrition and kitchen safety
  • Functioning and mobility
  • Health status and medications
  • Home and house

Although you may be able to gauge a lot about a parent’s safety and well-being by having a discussion with them, sometimes, there is no substitute for having a look yourself. Use our “Senior Safety and Well-Being Checklist” during this time.
