Poll Results: Your Top Concerns About Senior Nutrition
Poll results are in— we asked our A Place for Mom readers what worries them most about their loved ones’ diets and found that an overwhelming majority are concerned about appetite and medication side-effects. We’ll provide more tips in the coming weeks to help you address those issues.
Not long ago, we asked our readers about their most pressing concerns regarding senior nutrition. It’s a broad topic, covering psychological matters such as desire to eat and how food affects your mental state as well as physical and medical issues like food allergies and weight loss.
The top concern for APFM readers turns out to be “lack of desire to eat.” We all worry about whether our loved ones are getting proper nutrition as they age, and the desire to eat can be particularly difficult to monitor, especially if seniors are reluctant to talk about it. Whether the loss of appetite is due to medication, depression, or simply changing taste buds, not getting enough to eat is a serious problem among seniors—1-in-4 older Americans suffers from poor nutrition. Get more facts about preventing senior malnutrition so you can arm yourself against this all-too-common occurrence.
Rounding out the top three poll results were “medication side-effects and conflicts” and “impact of food on mental clarity and mood,” indicating that caregivers have a strong interest in how nutrition affects seniors’ overall health and well-being. Depending on what sort of vitamins, enzymes, herbs or other compounds are contained in a senior’s regular diet, the effects of certain prescription medications might be nullified—or multiplied. In addition to the obvious effects on physical health, food can also affect mental health in a variety of ways—a proper diet can even help protect against cognitive impairment.
