Assisted Living

Assisted living communities arrange residential living communities and assistance for seniors who might need help with self-administering medication or showering. Assisted living communities usually offer opportunities for organized activity, assistance with the activities of daily life, and assistance with appointments and transportation. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer dementia care, “aging in place”, or hospice. Wisconsin maintains a number of provisions related to this type of community. The Wisconsin Department of Health Services, Bureau of Assisted Living, Division of Quality Assurance, regulates community-based residential communities (CBRFs) governs this community type. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include If the medication administration is supervised by a licensed healthcare professionall, the community must ensure that these individuals coordinate the medication administration process and system, Residents may self-administer medications if they are capable, and when medication administration is not supervised by an RN, practitioner, or pharmacist, the CBRF must arrange for a pharmacist to package and label a resident’s prescription medications in unit dose. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include resident-specific services, behavior management, information and referral, and activity programming for persons with dementia. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as community must develop a temporary service plan to meet immediate needs, the plan must specify which program services will be provided to meet the resident’s needs as identified by the assessment and the frequency with which each service will be provided, reassessments must be conducted at least annually, and when residents have a change in needs, abilities, or condition, and initial comprehensive mental and physical assessment. Staff members receive training in a number of subjects. These areas include needs assessment of prospective residents, job responsibilities, community policies and procedures, and reporting abuse. Public assistance is available through The Elderly and Physically Disabled 1915(c) Waiver program, the Community Options 1915(c) Waiver program, and the Medicaid managed care 1915(b)(c) Family Care Waiver program for the aged and physically disabled. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include these meals must meet residents special dietary needs, these meals must meet the recommended dietary allowances based on current dietary guidelines for Americans, communities must provide at least three nutritious meals a day and a nutritious snack, and therapeutic diets must be provided if ordered by a physician.
