Assisted Living

An assisted living facility is an organized living community which administers assistance, support, and care to independent seniors who do not need skilled nursing care. Services offered often include aid with the activities of daily life. Inhabitants may be kept under monitoring and assessment. Under certain circumstances, facilities may provide nursing care, "aging in place", or hospice. The state of Wisconsin has specific rules related to this type of facility. The Wisconsin Department of Health Services, Bureau of Assisted Living, Division of Quality Assurance, regulates community-based residential facilities (CBRFs) supervises this type of facility. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. This facility has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include therapeutic diets must be provided if ordered by a physician, these meals must meet the recommended dietary allowances based on current dietary guidelines for Americans, these meals must meet residents’ special dietary needs, and facilities must provide at least three nutritious meals a day and a nutritious snack. This facility type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include when medication administration is not supervised by an RN, practitioner, or pharmacist, the CBRF must arrange for a pharmacist to package and label a resident's prescription medications in unit dose, Residents may self-administer medications if they are capable, and If the medication administration is supervised by a licensed healthcare professional, the facility must ensure that these individuals coordinate the medication administration process and system. Public assistance is available through The Elderly and Physically Disabled 1915(c) Waiver program, the Community Options 1915(c) Waiver program, and the Medicaid managed care 1915(b)(c) Family Care Waiver program for the aged and physically disabled. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as facility must develop a temporary service plan to meet immediate needs, initial comprehensive mental and physical assessment, reassessments must be conducted at least annually, and when residents have a change in needs, abilities, or condition, and the plan must specify which program services will be provided to meet the resident's needs as identified by the assessment and the frequency with which each service will be provided. Staff members receive training in a number of subjects. These include: facility policies and procedures, first-aid, reporting abuse, and provision of personal care. This type of facility is required to offer a number of services. These include independent living skills, including personal care, activity programming for persons with dementia, and transportation.
