An assisted living community is a residential community which offers assistance, support, and care to self-sufficient seniors who are not in need of skilled nursing support. Services provided often include support with activities of daily living. Occupants may be kept under monitoring and assessment. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide dementia care, hospice, or respite. The state of Wisconsin has specific regulations related to this kind of community. The Wisconsin Department of Health Services, Bureau of Assisted Living, Division of Quality Assurance, regulates community-based residential communities (CBRFs) certifies this type of community. Public assistance is available through The Elderly and Physically Disabled 1915(c) Waiver program, the Community Options 1915(c) Waiver program, and the Medicaid managed care 1915(b)(c) Family Care Waiver program for the aged and physically disabled. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include supervision, leisure time activities, information and referral, and health monitoring. Staff members receive education in a variety of areas. These areas include fire safety, standard precautions, needs assessment of prospective residents, and provision of personal care. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include these meals must meet residents special dietary needs, communities must provide at least three nutritious meals a day and a nutritious snack, therapeutic diets must be provided if ordered by a physician, and these meals must meet the recommended dietary allowances based on current dietary guidelines for Americans. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as initial comprehensive mental and physical assessment, the plan must specify which program services will be provided to meet the resident’s needs as identified by the assessment and the frequency with which each service will be provided, community must develop a temporary service plan to meet immediate needs, and reassessments must be conducted at least annually, and when residents have a change in needs, abilities, or condition. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include Residents may self-administer medications if they are capable, If the medication administration is supervised by a licensed healthcare professionall, the community must ensure that these individuals coordinate the medication administration process and system, and when medication administration is not supervised by an RN, practitioner, or pharmacist, the CBRF must arrange for a pharmacist to package and label a resident’s prescription medications in unit dose.
