Assisted Living

Assisted living communities provide social events, supervision, and personal care to people around 65 years of age or older. Assisted living communities frequently offer assistance with transportation and appointments, supervision of care, and outings for social activity. In certain instances, communities may offer “aging in place”, respite, or skilled nursing care. The state of Wisconsin has a number of stipulations related to this type of community. The Wisconsin Department of Health Services, Bureau of Assisted Living, Division of Quality Assurance, regulates community-based residential communities (CBRFs) governs this community type. Staff members obtain training in a number of subjects. These include: resident rights, challenging behaviors, development of service plans, and needs assessment of prospective residents. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include therapeutic diets must be provided if ordered by a physician, these meals must meet the recommended dietary allowances based on current dietary guidelines for Americans, these meals must meet residents special dietary needs, and communities must provide at least three nutritious meals a day and a nutritious snack. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as the plan must specify which program services will be provided to meet the resident’s needs as identified by the assessment and the frequency with which each service will be provided, initial comprehensive mental and physical assessment, community must develop a temporary service plan to meet immediate needs, and reassessments must be conducted at least annually, and when residents have a change in needs, abilities, or condition. Public assistance is available through The Elderly and Physically Disabled 1915(c) Waiver program, the Community Options 1915(c) Waiver program, and the Medicaid managed care 1915(b)(c) Family Care Waiver program for the aged and physically disabled. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include supervision, including personal care, behavior management, and resident-specific services. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include Residents may self-administer medications if they are capable, If the medication administration is supervised by a licensed healthcare professionall, the community must ensure that these individuals coordinate the medication administration process and system, and when medication administration is not supervised by an RN, practitioner, or pharmacist, the CBRF must arrange for a pharmacist to package and label a resident’s prescription medications in unit dose. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents.
