An assisted living community is a residential community which administers care, supervision, and assistance to self-sufficient seniors who are not in need of skilled nursing services. Assisted living communities often offer assistance with transit and appointments, opportunities for recreational activity, and aid with daily activities. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide respite, skilled nursing care, or hospice. In Illinois, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $50,040 . Illinois has specific regulations related to this kind of community. The Illinois Department of Public Health licenses this community type. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include reading the medication label to residents, medication administration, and supervision of self-administered medications. The maximum occupancy is 1 residents per room. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 3. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every residents. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide three daily meals. Public assistance is available through A Medicaid 1915(c) waiver called the Supported Living Program and a 1915(b) waiver called the Managed Long-Term Services and Supports program. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as evaluation of a prospective resident’s cognitive condition, evaluation of a prospective resident’s psychosocial condition, A comprehensive assessment, and assessment must be updated by a physician annually or upon a significant change in condition. Staff members receive education in a number of subjects. These areas include disaster procedures, philosophy and goals, hygiene, and abuse. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include medication administration, supervision of self-administered medications, housekeeping, and laundry.
