An assisted living facility is a residential community which administers care, supervision, and assistance to self-sufficient seniors who are not in need of skilled nursing services. Assisted living facilities often offer assistance with transit and appointments, opportunities for recreational activity, and aid with daily activities. Under certain circumstances, facilities may provide respite, skilled nursing care, or hospice. In Illinois, the annual median cost for an assisted living facility is around $50,040 . Illinois has specific regulations related to this kind of facility. The Illinois Department of Public Health licenses this facility type. This facility type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include reading the medication label to residents, medication administration, and supervision of self-administered medications. The maximum occupancy is 1 residents per room. This type of facility is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. The minimum number of residents for this facility type is 3. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every residents. This facility has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include facilities must provide three daily meals. Public assistance is available through A Medicaid 1915(c) waiver called the Supported Living Program and a 1915(b) waiver called the Managed Long-Term Services and Supports program. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as evaluation of a prospective resident's cognitive condition, evaluation of a prospective resident's psychosocial condition, A comprehensive assessment, and assessment must be updated by a physician annually or upon a significant change in condition. Staff members receive education in a number of subjects. These areas include disaster procedures, philosophy and goals, hygiene, and abuse. This type of facility is required to offer a number of services. These include medication administration, supervision of self-administered medications, housekeeping, and laundry.
