Assisted Living

Assisted living facilities provide organized living communities and health care for your loved one who might require a helping hand with things such as dressing or self-administering medication. Services provided often include help with ADLs. Residents may be kept under supervision and evaluation. In certain cases, facilities may provide hospice, nursing care, or respite. The state of Wisconsin maintains a number of provisions associated with this type of facility. The Wisconsin Department of Health Services, Bureau of Assisted Living, Division of Quality Assurance, regulates community-based residential facilities (CBRFs) licenses this type of facility. This type of facility is required to offer a number of services. These include supervision, independent living skills, transportation, and information and referral. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. Staff members obtain education in a variety of subjects. These include: job responsibilities, fire safety, standard precautions, and provision of personal care. This facility has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include these meals must meet residents’ special dietary needs, facilities must provide at least three nutritious meals a day and a nutritious snack, therapeutic diets must be provided if ordered by a physician, and these meals must meet the recommended dietary allowances based on current dietary guidelines for Americans. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as initial comprehensive mental and physical assessment, reassessments must be conducted at least annually, and when residents have a change in needs, abilities, or condition, the plan must specify which program services will be provided to meet the resident's needs as identified by the assessment and the frequency with which each service will be provided, and facility must develop a temporary service plan to meet immediate needs. This facility type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include If the medication administration is supervised by a licensed healthcare professional, the facility must ensure that these individuals coordinate the medication administration process and system, Residents may self-administer medications if they are capable, and when medication administration is not supervised by an RN, practitioner, or pharmacist, the CBRF must arrange for a pharmacist to package and label a resident's prescription medications in unit dose. Public assistance is available through The Elderly and Physically Disabled 1915(c) Waiver program, the Community Options 1915(c) Waiver program, and the Medicaid managed care 1915(b)(c) Family Care Waiver program for the aged and physically disabled.
