Assisted living communities offer regular social interaction and apartment style housing as well as personalized assistance. Services offered often involve help with ADLs. Residents may be kept under supervision and assessment. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer Alzheimer’s care, skilled nursing, or hospice. In Washington, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $66,000 . The state of Washington maintains a number of stipulations related to this type of community. The Washington State Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS), Aging and Long-Term Support Administration (Department) regulates this community type. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include resident self-administration of medication, medication administration provided through nurse delegation, and medication administration. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as mental illness, preferences regarding other issues important to the resident applicant, activities and service preferences, and level of personal care needs. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include basic personal care services, administration of health care treatments, assistance with ADLs, and general responsibility for each resident. In total, there can be no more than 2 residents to a room. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1915(c) Waiver program–Community Options Program Entry System (COPES).This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include a minimum of three meals a day at regular intervals, practitioner, nourishing and palatable meals adjusted to meet individual preferences to the extent reasonably possible, and not exceeding more than 14 hours between the evening meal and breakfast . Staff members obtain education in a number of areas. These include: nurse delegation and core diabetes, orientation (2 hours), First-aid and CPR, and safety training (3 hours).
