An assisted living community is a residential community which administers assistance, care, and support to self-sufficient individuals who do not need skilled nursing support. Assisted living communities often offer care supervision, aid with the activities of daily life, and assistance with transit and appointments. In select situations, communities may provide skilled nursing care, hospice, or dementia care. In Washington, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $66,000 . Washington maintains specific statutes related to this kind of community. The Washington State Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS), Aging and Long-Term Support Administration (Department) certifies this community type. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1915(c) Waiver program–Community Options Program Entry System (COPES).This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include general responsibility for each resident, administration of health care treatments, communities choose to provide certain health support services, and basic personal care services. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as level of personal care needs, an initial comprehensive exam including medical history , preferences regarding other issues important to the resident applicant, and activities and service preferences. The maximum occupancy is 2 residents per room. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include medication administration provided through nurse delegation, medication administration, and resident self-administration of medication. Staff members receive training in a number of areas. These areas include specialty training, continuing education, orientation (2 hours), and safety training (3 hours). This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include nourishing and palatable meals adjusted to meet individual preferences to the extent reasonably possible, practitioner, a minimum of three meals a day at regular intervals, and not exceeding more than 14 hours between the evening meal and breakfast .
