Assisted Living

An assisted living community is an organized living community which offers support, aid, and care to independent individuals who do not require skilled nursing services. Services offered often include support with the activities of daily life. Inhabitants may be kept under observation and evaluation. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer Alzheimer’s care, respite, or skilled nursing. Tennessee maintains a number of provisions associated with this type of community. The Tennessee Department of Health, Board for Licensing Health Care communities licenses this community type. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as physical assessment, recreational and social activities, arrangements for visits by or to health care providers, and assistance with health services. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include No more than 14 hours must elapse between the evening and morning meals, must provide three meals a day that meet acceptable and/or prescribed diet standards, the food must be adapted to residents habits, preferences, and and physical abilities, and must provide additional nourishment and/or snacks to residents with special dietary needs or upon request. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include residents may self-administer medication, observing the resident while taking medication, and reminding residents to take their medications. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include personal services such as protective care, responsibility for the safety of the resident when in the community, medication administration, and assistance with activities of daily living. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1115 managed care Long-Term Services and Supports CHOICES program. Staff must receive education in a variety of areas. These include: financial management, fire safety disaster preparedness, healthy lifestyles, and applicable state rules and regulations. In total, there can be no more than 2 residents to a room.
