An assisted living community is a residential living community which provides supervision, support, and assistance to medically stable seniors who do not require skilled nursing support. Assisted living communities often provide support with the activities of daily life, assistance with appointments and transit, and supervision of care. In some situations, communities may offer skilled nursing, “aging in place”, or respite. The state of Ohio has specific standards associated with this type of community. Ohio Department of Health supervises this type of community. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as medical diagnoses, psychological history, medication review, and cognitive status review. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include medication administration, intermittent nursing services, personal care, and assistance with self-administration of medication. Staff members obtain training in a number of fields. These areas include job responsibilities, securing emergency assistance, community procedures, and residents rights. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include reminders, verifying labels, and observation. Public assistance is available through 1915(c) Assisted Living Program and the 1915(b)(c) Managed Care Demonstration Waiver called MyCare. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 17. There must be one bath or shower for every 8 residents and one toilet for every 8 residents. The maximum occupancy is 4 residents per room.
