Assisted Living

An assisted living community is a residential community which administers care, support, and aid to independent persons who are not in need of skilled nursing support. The types of service provided often include aid with ADLs. Occupants may be kept under supervision and evaluation. In certain situations, communities may provide Alzheimer’s care, respite, or nursing care. Ohio maintains a number of stipulations associated with this type of community. Ohio Department of Health licenses this community type. Public assistance is available through 1915(c) Assisted Living Program and the 1915(b)(c) Managed Care Demonstration Waiver called MyCare. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include intermittent nursing services, assistance with self-administration of medication, supervision, and personal care. There is a maximum occupancy of 4 residents per room. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 17. There must be one toilet for every 8 residents and one bath or shower for every 8 residents. Staff members obtain education in a variety of fields. These areas include securing emergency assistance, residents rights, community procedures, and job responsibilities. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include assistance opening and taking medication, verifying labels, and reminders. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as cognitive status review, medication review, health history, and psychical history.
