Assisted living communities offer residential living communities and assistance for seniors who require support with everyday activities such as washing or mobility. The services provided often involve support with ADLs. Occupants may be kept under monitoring and assessment. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide Alzheimer’s care, hospice, or “aging in place”. The state of Ohio maintains specific rules related to this type of community. Ohio Department of Health regulates this type of community. There must be one bath or shower for every 8 residents and one toilet for every 8 residents. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 17. The maximum occupancy is 4 residents per room. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include personal care, intermittent nursing services, medication administration, and supervision. Staff members receive education in a variety of areas. These areas include securing emergency assistance, residents rights, community procedures, and job responsibilities. Public assistance is available through 1915(c) Assisted Living Program and the 1915(b)(c) Managed Care Demonstration Waiver called MyCare. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as functional status assessment, health history, psychological history, and medication review. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include observation, verifying labels, and reminders.
