Assisted living communities often provide care supervision, chances for leisurely activity, and support with daily activities. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer respite, dementia care, or hospice. Nebraska has a number of provisions related to this type of community. Nebraska Division of Public Health, Department of Health and Human Services, Department of Licensure and Regulation regulates this community type. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include provide adequate food services, monitor for nutritional problems on specified weight changes, and must offer written menus based on federal nutrition standards. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance with personal care, health maintenance activities, supportive services, and behavioral management. Public assistance is available through Government assistance is covered through two Medicaid 1915(c) waiver programs.. Staff are required to obtain training in a variety of fields. These areas include resident care/services, social services, rules/regulations/standards for operating an ALF, and administration. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as services provided by the community: how often, when and by who and services for residents with special needs. In total, there can be no more than 4 residents to a room. There must be one bath or shower for every 8 residents and one toilet for every 6 residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day.
