Assisted living communities provide supervision, healthcare, and social opportunities to persons around 65 years of age or older. Assisted living communities commonly provide help with daily activities, supervision of care, and outings for leisurely activity. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer respite, Alzheimer’s care, or hospice. In Missouri, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $34,566 . The state of Missouri has a number of provisions associated with this type of community. The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, Division of Regulation and Licensure, Section for Long-Term Care Regulation certifies this type of community. Staff must receive education in a number of areas. These include: abuse/neglect, mentally confused residents, orientation appropriate to job function and responsibilities, and preservation of resident dignity. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. Public assistance is available through the Medicaid State Plan Personal Care authority. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide at least three daily meals, modified diets prescribed by a physician can be provided, and modified diets must be reviewed at least quarterly by a consulting nutritionist, dietitian, RN, or physician. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as assessment must be repeated whenever the resident has a significant change in condition and at least semiannually, authorized staff person and a physician must conduct a physical exam to document the individual’s current medical status and write any special orders regarding care and needed procedures, an individualized service plan must be developed that describes the services to be provided to meet the resident’s needs, and complete screening prior to admission to determine whether an applicant is eligible to be admitted. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include Injections may be administered only by a physician or licensed nurse, insulin injections may be administered by a certified medication technician or level i medication aide who has successfully completed the state-approved course for insulin administration, and self-administer prescription and nonprescription medications if a licensed health provider approves. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include protective oversight, assistance with distribution, assistance with storage of medications, and assistance with instrumental activities of daily living.
