Assisted living communities offer organized living communities and assistance for your loved one who may need help with dressing or mobility. The services provided often include aid with the activities of daily life. Occupants may be kept under supervision and evaluation. In select situations, communities may offer dementia care, respite, or “aging in place”. In Michigan, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $48,000 . Michigan has a number of stipulations associated with this type of community. The Department of Human Services licenses certifies this community type. Staff are required to obtain education in a number of fields. These include: safety and fire prevention, standard precautions, staff training program based on the residents’ service plans, and supervision. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include being aware of a resident’s general whereabouts, supporting a resident’s personal and social needs, guidance, and medication management. Public assistance is available through Medicaid State Plan. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 21. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include reminding a resident to maintain his/her medication schedule in accordance with the prescription, medication supervision and administration, and proper training of direct care workers to handle and administer medications. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include Food must be prepared in accordance with the recommended daily dietary allowances of the Food and Nutrition Board of the National Academy of Sciences National Research Council, communities must provide medical nutrition therapy if prescribed by a licensed health care professional, and three daily meals and snacks must be provided. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as The service plan must be updated annually and following a significant change in health status, service plan identifies the individual’s need for activities, service plan takes into account the preferences and competency of the resident, and service plan identifies the individual’s need for services.
